Using Supr Bundles & Subscriptions with other apps and tools

Wondering whether Supr Bundles & Subscriptions works with your theme, your page builder or another app you already use? Short answer: the app is built on Shopify's own subscription system, and every renewal charge creates a normal Shopify order, so most apps that work with Shopify orders and customers (email tools, loyalty apps, fulfilment apps, Shopify Flow) work with your subscriptions too. What does not combine is another bundle or subscription widget on the same product, and anything outside your online store theme, such as a headless storefront or Shopify POS.

This guide goes through each kind of app and tool merchants ask us about, what works, what does not, and what to do instead.

Quick answers

App or tool

Does it work with Supr Bundles & Subscriptions?

Other bundle apps (Kaching Bundles and similar)

Not together with our subscriptions. Use our bundle options instead.

Another subscription app

Can stay installed while you move over, but never on the same product.

Variant picker and swatch apps

Yes, when they use your real Shopify variants.

Product options apps

Options that are not real Shopify variants are not part of the subscription.

Shopify Bundles app products

Yes on subscription, with a few rules.

Loyalty and points apps (Smile, LoyaltyLion)

No direct integration. Points on renewal orders usually work.

Klaviyo

Yes. We send your subscription events to Klaviyo. Connect it under Settings > Integrations > Klaviyo.

Other email tools (Omnisend, Shopify Email)

No direct integration. Use orders and our customer tags.

Not built in. Request it on the Feature requests page.

Themes

Yes, through the app embed.

How the app fits in with other apps

Supr Bundles & Subscriptions does not run its own checkout or payment system. It uses the subscription building blocks Shopify provides:

  • Shoppers check out through your normal Shopify cart and checkout.
  • Each subscription is a Shopify subscription contract, which you manage under Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Subscriptions.
  • Each successful renewal creates a new Shopify order, which shows up in your orders, reports and every app connected to your orders.
  • Bundle prices are applied at checkout by our own Shopify discounts, named Supr Bundle Pricing and Supr Bundle Block Pricing (older installs may still show them under the old app name until the app updates them).

So the rule of thumb is: an app that reads Shopify orders and customers already sees your subscription orders and subscribers. Problems come from apps that change the product page or the cart in the same place we do: another bundle widget, another subscription widget, or an app that replaces the add to cart button.

Other bundle apps such as Kaching Bundles

Our subscriptions do not combine with another app's bundles. Shopify only lets a bundle and a subscription work together when both are built to work together, and we do not integrate with other bundle apps (Kaching Bundles and similar). That is the reason bundles and subscriptions live in the same app here.

Running another bundle app on the same product usually causes one of these:

  • Two widgets on one page, which confuses shoppers.
  • The other app replaces the add to cart button, and the subscription the shopper chose never reaches the cart.
  • The other app's automatic discount competes with ours. Shopify never adds two product discounts together on a cart line: it charges the bigger one and ignores the other, so your bundle prices change in the cart. See When another discount app overrides your prices.

What to do instead: build the bundle as bundle options in an offer. Choose the offer type Bundle + Subscription and customers can buy each bundle one-time or on subscription. Quantity breaks, Buy X Get Y, fixed bundles and build your own bundles are all available, see Bundle types.

Then, on the products in your offers, turn off the other app's app embed and remove its blocks in the theme editor, or uninstall it if you no longer need it. In Shopify admin > Discounts, pause any automatic discounts it left behind that cover the same products.

We cannot change how another bundle app's items appear in the customer portal, on order pages or in emails. Those items are that app's to display.

Keeping another subscription app installed

You can keep your old subscription app (Recharge, Seal, Appstle, Shopify Subscriptions and so on) installed while you move over. Each app renews only its own subscriptions, and our widget only shows our own offers, so nobody is charged twice for the same subscription.

Keep these rules in mind:

  • Never sell the same product through both apps. On products that are in one of our offers, turn off the other app's app embed and remove its widget blocks, so shoppers see one widget.
  • Do not uninstall the old app while it still has subscribers you want to keep. Uninstalling it ends its billing. Move them over first, in the order described in Migrating to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions.
  • Clean up its discounts. Old subscription and bundle apps often leave automatic discounts behind. Pause the ones you no longer use in Shopify admin > Discounts.

If you have no subscribers in the old app yet, you can simply uninstall it.

Upsell apps

The app has its own upsells and cross-sells under Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Grow, see Upsells. You do not have to remove another upsell app, but one that replaces the add to cart button or adds its own automatic discounts can clash in the same ways as a bundle app. If subscriptions start going into the cart as one-time purchases, turn it off for a moment and test again.

Variant picker, swatch and product options apps

Subscriptions attach to real Shopify product variants, the ones you create under a product's Variants in Shopify admin. That is a Shopify rule for every subscription app, not something specific to ours.

  • Variant picker and swatch apps that only change how your real variants look (colour swatches, buttons, images) can be used with the widget. If the widget's prices or options do not change when a shopper picks another variant, see Changing a product variant is not updating the widget and send us the product link.
  • Product options apps that add choices which are not real variants (engraving text, extra options, "infinite options") are not part of the subscription. They cannot be subscribed to, swapped or discounted by the app. If an options app charges for an option by adding a separate fee item to the cart, that item is a one-time purchase and is not included in renewals.

If you need a choice to renew with the subscription, make it a real Shopify variant.

Shopify Bundles app products on subscription

A bundle product made with Shopify Bundles (Shopify's own bundles app) can be sold on subscription, with a few rules that come from Shopify.

What happens: Shopify does not allow a bundle product to be added to the cart with a subscription (the add fails with an error such as "The bundle product ... cannot be added to the cart"). So when a shopper chooses a subscription on a bundle product, the app adds the bundle's component products instead, all on the same subscription and each labelled with the bundle's name. The shopper checks out one subscription holding every component, and the app prices the component lines so together they cost the bundle's price with your subscription discount. One-time purchases of the bundle work as normal.

What you need for it to work:

  1. Every component product in the same offer as the bundle. The offer editor adds them for you and marks them Bundle component. If some are missing, a warning with an Add component products button appears above the product list. See Shopify bundle products.
  2. The offer is Published, not Draft.
  3. The widget is turned on under Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Design with Enable widget.
  4. Every component is in stock. If one component is sold out, Shopify cannot add the bundle.

What to expect:

  • The cart and checkout list the components as separate lines rather than one bundle line.
  • While a subscription is selected on a bundle product, Buy it now, Shop Pay and other express checkout buttons are hidden, because they would check out the bundle without its components. Shoppers use Add to cart. The buttons come back for a one-time purchase.
  • The bundle's price is the price set on the bundle product in Shopify. It does not follow later price changes on the components, so update it yourself.
  • Changing the bundle's components in Shopify later does not change subscriptions that already exist.
  • To show a subscription option only on bundle products, open that option and click Bundle products only (one of the small chips under the option's main fields), then turn it on.

Simpler alternative: use bundle options in an offer on an ordinary product page. For a multipack of one product (2, 3 or 4 of the same item), a Quantity break option in a Bundle + Subscription offer is the simplest choice: a "Buy 4" option sells 4 units of that product from its own stock. For a set of different products use a fixed bundle, and to let customers choose use build your own bundle. See Bundle types.

We have confirmed this with bundles made by Shopify Bundles. A bundle from another bundle app can only work this way if that app creates a real Shopify bundle product. Most bundle apps use their own widget and discounts instead, and those bundles cannot be sold on our subscriptions.

Loyalty and points apps such as Smile and LoyaltyLion

There is no direct integration with Smile, LoyaltyLion or other points apps, and the app has no points system of its own.

  • Earning points: renewal orders are normal, paid Shopify orders, so a points app that awards points for orders usually awards them for renewals too. Each app has its own rules, so check with a test subscription first, see Creating a test subscription order.
  • Spending points: points apps usually hand out a Shopify discount code. A code only works on a subscription purchase if its Purchase type in Shopify admin > Discounts includes Subscription. Renewals are charged automatically, without a checkout, so there is no moment at renewal where a code can be typed in. Subscribers can add a code to their subscription from the customer portal, and Shopify accepts it only if the code applies to subscriptions.

Built-in alternative: A loyalty program, made in Grow > Journeys from the Loyalty rewards or Spend rewards template, rewards subscribers automatically after a number of renewals or once they have spent a set amount, with a bigger discount, a free or discounted product, or a gift card. See Loyalty programs.

If a loyalty app's team wants to build a deeper integration, they can contact our support with what they need.

Email tools such as Klaviyo, Omnisend and Shopify Email

Klaviyo is connected directly: we send your subscription events to your Klaviyo account and you build the emails as Klaviyo flows, see Sending subscription events to Klaviyo below.

The app has no built-in connection to Omnisend, Mailchimp or other email platforms at the moment. You usually do not need one:

  • Subscribers are normal Shopify customers and renewals are normal Shopify orders, so an email tool connected to your Shopify store picks them up like any other customer and order.
  • To tell subscribers apart, use our tags.

Segmenting subscribers with tags:

  1. Go to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Settings > Tags.
  2. Tick the tags you want and click Save, then Update tags.
    • Customer tags: Has subscription contract, Has active subscription, Has paused subscription, Has cancelled subscription, Has completed subscription, Has failed subscription.
    • Order tags: Subscription order, Subscription order number, Initial order, Recurring order, Subscription renewal number.
  3. Wait a few minutes. The tags are also added to your existing subscribers and subscription orders, not just new ones.
  4. In your email tool, build a segment on the tag. Most email tools that connect to Shopify import customer tags; check your tool's help for where it shows them.

You can change the wording of each tag on the same page. Examples:

  • Active subscribers: customers tagged "has active subscription".
  • One-time buyers who never subscribed: customers without the "has subscription contract" tag.
  • In Shopify Email or a Shopify customer segment: customer_tags CONTAINS 'has active subscription'.
  • Telling first orders from renewals (for example in an affiliate app): the Initial order and Recurring order order tags.

The full list is in Tag Settings.

Our own emails: the app sends subscription emails itself (for example upcoming renewal and failed payment emails). It does not send bulk or marketing emails, so use your email tool for campaigns. If your email tool sends its own version of one of our emails, switch ours off under Settings > Notifications > Customer notifications so customers do not get both. If that tool is Klaviyo and you use the connection below, leave ours on: the connection already sends each message from one side only, and a notification switched off here is not sent to Klaviyo either. See Notifications.

Sending subscription events to Klaviyo

Connect Klaviyo under Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Settings > Integrations > Klaviyo. It is available to every merchant.

  1. In Klaviyo, go to Settings > Account > API keys and create a Private API key. Full Access works. If you choose Custom, set Events to Full and Accounts to Read. A Read-Only key cannot send events. Klaviyo does not let you change a key's access afterwards, so if you picked the wrong one, create a new key.
  2. On the Klaviyo page in the app, paste the key into Private API key and click Connect. The page shows Connected with your Klaviyo account name.
  3. Under Who sends your customer emails, pick one:
    • Supr Bundles & Subscriptions: we keep sending every customer email. This is the default.
    • Klaviyo: we stop sending customer emails and send the events to Klaviyo instead.
    • Choose per notification: tick the ones Klaviyo should send, and we keep sending the rest.
  4. Click Save. If this hands emails to Klaviyo, the app asks you to confirm and lists the emails that stop coming from us. Build and switch on the flow first: Klaviyo accepts our events whether or not a flow is listening, so a customer gets nothing until it is live.
  5. Under Test an event, pick a notification and a subscription (or our sample subscription) and click Send test event. The test is addressed to your store's contact email, not to a customer, and is marked test: true. It works before you switch the sender, so you can build your flows first.
  6. In Klaviyo, build a flow for each event with a metric trigger. Each notification arrives as its own metric, such as Subscription Started, Subscription Renewing Soon or Subscription Payment Failed, and the page lists the name of every one. A metric shows up in Klaviyo once its first event has arrived, which is what the test is for.

Every event carries the subscription, its products, totals, next order date and a link to the customer portal, so you can build the whole message in your own Klaviyo templates and languages.

Good to know:

  • Each customer message comes from us or from Klaviyo, never both.
  • Staff notifications and the Email me a copy switches keep coming from us either way.
  • A notification turned off under Settings > Notifications is off everywhere, Klaviyo included. Turn it on there first.
  • If Klaviyo rejects an event, for example because the key was deleted, we send that customer our own email instead, and the Klaviyo page shows Klaviyo rejected the last event with a Re-check key button.
  • Disconnect deletes your key and we go back to sending your customer emails ourselves.

Shopify Flow

Yes, you can use Shopify Flow. The app does not add triggers of its own, which is why you do not find it in Flow's list of apps. Use Shopify's own subscription triggers instead: because the app uses Shopify's subscription contracts, they fire for subscriptions created with it.

  • Subscription contract created: a new subscription, for example to send a different email per product.
  • Subscription contract updated: a subscription changed.
  • Subscription billing attempt success, Subscription billing attempt failure and Subscription billing attempt challenged: a renewal charge.
  • Customer tags added: combined with our customer tags, for example to react when a customer gets the "has cancelled subscription" tag.

Shopify's list of triggers: Shopify Flow triggers. Test your workflow with a test subscription before relying on it.

Fulfilment apps and 3PLs

Yes, each renewal creates an order your fulfilment app can ship.

  • Pay per delivery: when a renewal charge succeeds, a new Shopify order is created and linked to the subscription. Fulfilment apps, 3PLs and warehouse systems that pull Shopify orders receive it like any other order. A failed charge creates no order until it succeeds.
  • Prepaid: the customer pays once for several deliveries. The later deliveries are scheduled on the original order and become ready to fulfil on their date. Ask your fulfilment provider whether it handles Shopify's scheduled fulfilments before you launch prepaid subscription options. See When customers are charged vs when orders are fulfilled.

To let a warehouse or 3PL tell subscription orders apart, turn on the order tags in Settings > Tags (see above). To plan stock for upcoming renewals, see Inventory Planner.

Shopify POS

The app has no Shopify POS integration. The widget and bundle options are built for your online store, and we have not confirmed that subscriptions or bundle option prices work at the till. Shopify's own rules for selling subscriptions in person are in Selling subscriptions on Shopify POS.

If you need to sell subscriptions or bundles in store, contact support before you plan around it, and add a request on the Feature requests page so we can see how many merchants need it.

Headless, Hydrogen and Storefront API tokens

Headless storefronts are not officially supported. The widget, the bundle options and the app embed are part of your online store theme, so they do not appear on a Hydrogen or other custom storefront. The rest of the app works as usual, because it does not depend on your storefront: renewals, dunning, notifications and everything under Subscriptions.

To sell subscriptions on a headless storefront, a developer builds the choice into your own product page:

  • Subscriptions are Shopify's own purchase options (Shopify calls them selling plans in its API). Your developer reads them from the product and adds the chosen one to the cart line through Shopify's Storefront API.
  • Bundle option prices still apply at checkout if the cart lines carry the right properties, see Using bundle discounts with a custom add to cart.

Where do I get a Storefront API access token? A site builder (for example Lovable) or headless front end that asks for a Storefront API access token needs a Shopify token, not one from our app. Install Shopify's Headless channel from the Shopify App Store and click Create storefront to get one, see Shopify's Storefront API getting started guide.

Our own API under Settings > Integrations > API is something else: it lets your own server read and change subscriptions, and its tokens must never be put in a storefront or browser. See Using the API.

Page builders such as PageFly and GemPages

Product pages built with a page builder (PageFly, GemPages, Shogun and others) work like theme product pages: with the widget turned on, the app embed places it above the add to cart button on its own.

Landing pages, the home page and other pages need the Subscriptions + Bundles app block with its Product set:

  • On a theme page such as the home page, add a section that shows one product (most themes call it Featured product), then Add block, Apps, Subscriptions + Bundles.
  • In PageFly, use its App blocks element.

Step by step: Showing the widget on other pages and PageFly and other page builders.

If your builder's app element does not list Subscriptions + Bundles (merchants have reported this with GemPages landing pages), or the widget lands in the wrong place, contact support with the page link.

A/B testing and price testing apps

The app has no built-in A/B testing of offers, options or widget designs. If you would like it, add or vote for it on the Feature requests page.

We have not tested third-party A/B testing apps with the widget. Keep in mind that if a price testing app changes prices with its own automatic discount, Shopify charges only the bigger of that discount and ours on each cart line, which changes your bundle prices. Place a test order in each version of the test before you run it on products with an offer.

Themes

The widget works with Shopify themes through the app embed:

  1. Go to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Design and click Enable widget.
  2. The theme editor opens with the app embed switched on. Click Save there.

The embed places the widget above the add to cart button on its own. The Subscriptions + Bundles theme block is optional, for an exact position or for pages other than product pages. When the block is on a page, the embed's copy removes itself, so using both does not show the widget twice. Keep the app embed on. See How to enable the subscription widget.

You change the widget's look on the Design page, see The Subscription Widget.

If something looks or behaves wrong on your theme (misaligned, a wrong price, the add to cart button text doubled, subscriptions added as one-time, broken on mobile), check these first:

  • Doubled or odd add to cart button text: turn off the Add to cart button text add-on on the Design page, see Product Page Add-ons.
  • Subscriptions added as one-time: test with the main add to cart button, not a sticky add to cart bar or quick buy button, and turn off other cart or add to cart apps for a moment. See Subscriptions are not adding to cart.
  • Quick add or quick view pop-ups: some themes show the widget inside their pop-up, some do not, and some open the product page instead for products with a subscription. If yours adds the product without showing the widget, turn off quick add in your theme settings so shoppers choose on the product page.
  • Widget shown twice or at the bottom of the page: see The subscription widget appears twice or at the bottom of the page.
  • Is it the theme? Add a free Shopify theme such as Horizon or Dawn under Online Store > Themes (no need to publish it), turn on Supr Bundle & Subscriptions under App embeds in its theme editor, and preview the same product. If the problem is gone there, it comes from your theme or another app.

Still broken? Contact support with the product link, your theme's name and a short screen recording. If your store is password protected, include the password, see How to share your online store password with support. Theme conflicts are usually fixable on our side, and we will look into it.

Common questions

  • Can I use Kaching Bundles (or another bundle app) with your subscriptions on the same product?

No. Our subscriptions do not combine with another app's bundles, and two apps' discounts on one cart line do not add up. Build the bundle as bundle options in a Bundle + Subscription offer instead, see Other bundle apps.

  • Do I need to uninstall my other bundle, subscription and upsell apps?

Not necessarily, but turn off their widgets on products in your offers and pause their leftover automatic discounts. If an old subscription app still bills subscribers, move them over before uninstalling it, see Migrating to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions.

  • My variant picker app says your app is the problem. What now?

Subscriptions only work with real Shopify variants. If the app uses real variants and the widget still does not follow the shopper's choice, send us the product link with both apps turned on and we will look into it.

  • Why do I get "The bundle product cannot be added to the cart" on my Shopify Bundles product?

Shopify cannot put a bundle product on a subscription directly, so the app adds its components instead. Check that every component is in the same offer, in stock, and that the widget is turned on, see Shopify Bundles app products on subscription.

  • Will my loyalty points app still give points on subscription orders?

Usually yes, because renewals are normal Shopify orders. Test it with a test subscription, since each loyalty app has its own rules.

  • Do you integrate with Klaviyo or Omnisend?

Klaviyo, yes: we send your subscription events to Klaviyo so you can build the emails as flows there, see Sending subscription events to Klaviyo. Omnisend, not directly: turn on our customer and order tags in Settings > Tags and build your segments on them in Omnisend or Shopify Email.

  • Why doesn't Supr Bundles & Subscriptions appear in Shopify Flow?

The app uses Shopify's own subscription triggers, such as Subscription contract created, rather than adding its own. Pick those under Shopify's triggers.

  • Where do I get a Storefront API access token for my headless site?

From Shopify, not from our app: install Shopify's Headless channel and create a storefront. Our API under Settings > Integrations > API is only for your own server.
