How to change the subscription policy text on the product page

When a subscription option is selected on a product page, most themes show a short legal notice below the buy buttons, such as "This item is a recurring or deferred purchase. By continuing, I agree to the cancellation policy and authorize you to charge my payment method...". Shopify requires this so customers know they are starting a subscription. The wording belongs to your theme, not to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions, and you can change it in your theme's language editor. This guide shows how, and explains the similar notice at checkout.

The policy typically states: "This item is a recurring or deferred purchase. By continuing, I agree to the cancellation policy and authorize you to charge my payment method at the prices, frequency and dates listed on this page until my order is fulfilled or I cancel, if permitted."

How to adjust the subscription policy text

The wording of this policy text is managed by your online store theme. You can customize it using your theme's language editor:

  1. In your Shopify admin, navigate to Online Store.

  1. In your active theme, click the three dots button and select Edit default theme content.

  1. In the search box, type the beginning of your policy text (e.g. "This item is a recurring or deferred").

  1. Edit the text as needed, making sure you are targeting the instance on the product page, as similar text may appear elsewhere in your theme.

The text variable {{ cancellationPolicyLink }} must be included for the new policy text to work.

  1. Save your changes.

  1. Check if the text has correctly updated in your online store.

{{ cancellationPolicyLink }} becomes a link to your store's cancellation policy, which you write in your Shopify admin under Settings > Policies.

The theme editor changes the words only. Changing how the notice looks (its size, spacing, a border or an icon) is theme styling, so ask your theme developer, or message us and we will take a look.

The policy text at checkout

Shopify's checkout shows its own subscription notice near the payment button, and a Recurring subtotal line that says how much and how often the customer will be charged. Shopify requires these for every subscription and draws them itself, so no app can remove them.

  • Some checkout wording can be changed in the same place as above: Online Store > Themes > ... > Edit default theme content, in the Checkout & system tab. Search for the sentence you want to change.
  • Wording Shopify does not list there cannot be changed. Deeper checkout customization is a Shopify Plus feature.

To see what else shoppers read in the cart and at checkout, including why the recurring subtotal can show a price before discounts, see What shoppers see in the cart and at checkout.

Wording that comes from your offer

Not every sentence near the buy buttons is Shopify's. Lines such as "Cancel anytime", "No commitment" or "Delivery every month" inside the widget are your own wording, and you can change them:

  • A subscription option's Description and Benefits: open the offer in Offers and open the option. Description is one of its main fields. Benefits is listed under them as a small chip that names it and, once it is on, shows On or its value; click it to open that setting.
  • Shared widget wording, such as the heading and the one-time purchase row: Design, in the Labels card.
  • The Information tooltip, a question mark beside the widget that shows the selected option's Description, a good place to explain your own terms: switch it on in Design > Elements and set its title in Labels (Information tooltip title).

If you require a minimum number of orders before a customer can cancel, make sure none of these lines still says "Cancel anytime". See Requiring a minimum number of payments before cancellation.

Troubleshooting

If your theme does not list the policy text in Edit default theme content, contact your theme developer: they will know where the text lives in that theme. For any further questions, reach out to us via live chat.

Common questions

Where does "This item is a recurring or deferred purchase" come from?
From your theme, because Shopify requires it for subscriptions. Change the wording in Online Store > Themes > ... > Edit default theme content, keeping {{ cancellationPolicyLink }} in it.

Can I remove the policy text?
It is a Shopify requirement for subscriptions, so we recommend rewording it rather than removing it.

Can I change the subscription notice at checkout?
Only the wording Shopify exposes in the Checkout & system tab of Edit default theme content. The rest of the checkout is drawn by Shopify.

The widget says "Cancel anytime" but I require a minimum commitment. How do I change it?
That line is your own wording, in the option's Description or Benefits in Offers, or in Design > Labels. Edit it there and save.
