Loyalty programs

Loyalty programs reward customers for staying subscribed, automatically. You decide what subscribers get and on which order: a bigger discount the longer they stay, a lower price after an intro offer, free shipping from a certain order, a free product or a gift card. Rewards are applied to the subscription itself, so there is nothing for the customer to claim.

A loyalty program is a journey: create one in Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Grow > Journeys from the Loyalty rewards or Spend rewards template. It only works once it runs on a subscription option (see step 2 below).

What a loyalty program does

A loyalty program watches each subscription on the subscription options it is attached to. When a subscription reaches an order number (or a spending threshold) you set, the program applies the reward to that subscription's upcoming order.

Loyalty programs are for subscriptions only. They do not reward one-time purchases, and they are not a store-wide points program.

How order numbers count

  • Order 1 is the customer's first purchase, the checkout order. It is always priced by the subscription option's own discount, so it cannot be picked in a program.
  • Order 2 is the first renewal, Order 3 the second renewal, and so on.
  • So "from the 3rd delivery" is Order 3, and "after 6 renewals" is Order 7.

On a subscription's own page, the loyalty card counts renewals as cycles: Cycle 1 there is Order 2 in the program editor.

Reward triggers

A program counts one of two things, chosen by the template you start from:

  • Loyalty rewards, by order number: rewards at specific order numbers (for example a reward at Order 2 and a bigger one at Order 6).
  • Spend rewards, by amount spent: rewards when the customer's total spend on the subscription crosses a Spend threshold you set.

You can add several rewards to one program. Start over after the last reward decides what happens next:

  • Off: the rewards stay claimed.
  • On: the program starts over from the first reward.

Reward types

Each order (or spending tier) can hold one or more rewards:

  • Change discount: sets a new subscription discount, as a Percentage, an Amount off or a Fixed price. It replaces the subscription option's discount, it does not stack on it: the new discount is worked out from the product's regular price. An option at 10% with a Change discount of 15% gives 15% off, not 25%.
  • Free product: adds a product to the order at no charge.
  • Discounted product: adds a product at the percentage off you set (Discount %).
  • Free shipping: sets shipping on the order to free.
  • Gift card: issues the customer a Shopify gift card for the Gift card amount, with an optional Expiration.

How long a reward lasts

Every reward has a Duration:

  • One-off (single order): the reward applies to that one order only. This is the default. A one-off Change discount goes back to the subscription option's discount on the next order.
  • For a number of orders: the reward applies to the number of Orders you enter, then stops.
  • Ongoing (all future orders): the reward stays on every order from then on.

For a lasting price change (an intro discount that drops to the normal one, or a discount that grows over time), choose Ongoing (all future orders). For a one-time thank-you gift, keep One-off (single order).

A later reward replaces an earlier Change discount. For example, 15% from Order 4 and 20% from Order 7 gives 15% on Orders 4 to 6 and 20% from Order 7.

Conditions

A reward can also require up to four conditions: Minimum order value, Minimum total spent (order-based programs only), Must include products and Must exclude products. With no conditions the reward always applies.

Step 1: Create a loyalty program

  1. Go to Grow > Journeys and click the Loyalty rewards template, or Spend rewards. The journey opens full screen in the editor: a Subscription started trigger followed by one Start loyalty flow step, with two example rewards to change or delete.
  2. To name it, click More actions > Rename.
  3. Click the Start loyalty flow step. Turn on Start over after the last reward if the program should repeat. The Description is for your own reference.
  4. Click Add order (or Add tier) and enter the Order (or Spend) in the new card. Its Description is shown to shoppers with the rewards.
  5. The card opens a reward to fill in: choose the Reward type, its settings and Duration. Click Add a condition to give it one. Click Add reward for another reward on the same order, and click a reward's line to open it again.
  6. Repeat for more orders or rewards. The editor saves as you go.
  7. Click Turn on journey. Until then the program is off and nobody joins it. Later changes to a program that is on reach new subscriptions when you click Turn on changes.

Programs made before October 2026 in Grow > Loyalty and rewards are journeys too and are listed in Grow > Journeys. A reward icon they had stays, but new rewards no longer take one.

Step 2: Run the program on a subscription option

A program that runs on no subscription option rewards nobody. In the journey, click the Subscription started trigger and choose the options under Runs on. A subscription option is on one loyalty program at a time.

You can also set loyalty rewards on the option itself: in Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Offers, open the offer and the subscription option, and click Loyalty rewards under Loyalty in its additional settings. The rewards are edited right there and run as a journey for that option.

Options that use a program made before October 2026 keep a Loyalty program setting in Offers, where it can be changed or turned off.

Every new subscription on those options joins the program.

What customers see

  • On the product page: turn on Loyalty bonus under Design > Add-on settings to show the program's rewards with the subscription option.
  • At checkout: when the program changes the price, Shopify's checkout shows what later orders will cost.
  • In the customer portal: subscribers see their loyalty rewards on their subscription.
  • Journeys too: a journey under Grow > Journeys with Show its rewards to customers on appears in the same places, next to the program's rewards. A journey that starts a loyalty flow (see below) is shown instead of the program on the options it runs on. Both are listed on this page under Loyalty in journeys.

Starting a loyalty flow from any journey

A loyalty program joins a subscription when it starts on an option that uses the program. To start a loyalty flow at another moment, or for some subscribers only, add a Start loyalty flow: order number or Start loyalty flow: amount spent step to any journey under Grow > Journeys. For example: after Order paid for order 3, a Customer tag condition for VIP, then Start loyalty flow: amount spent.

  • A subscription is on one loyalty flow at a time. When it reaches a Start loyalty flow step it leaves the flow it was on, including the program from its subscription option. It keeps its order count and what it has spent so far, so a reward at Order 6 still comes on its 6th order. Rewards it already has run until their duration ends.
  • Each journey starts its flow once per subscription, even when the journey runs on every order.
  • The product page and the portal show a journey's flow when its step comes right after Subscription started, on chosen subscription options, with no condition before it, because only then does every new subscriber get it. It is shown instead of the option's own program.
  • When two journeys can start a loyalty flow on the same option, the editor and the option's Journeys section in Offers warn you. Journeys run oldest first, so the newer one wins.

To check a program, place a test subscription order, then open the subscription in Subscriptions and use Renew immediately to create the next orders.

Recipes

A bigger discount on the first order, then the normal discount (for example 20%, then 10%)
Set the subscription option's discount to 20%. Create a program with a reward at Order 2: Change discount, Percentage, 10, Duration Ongoing (all future orders). Attach it to the subscription option. Full walkthrough: Offering a free trial or discounted first order.

An intro price for the first 3 orders
Same as above, with the reward at Order 4.

The longer you stay, the more you save (10%, then 15%, then 20%)
Set the subscription option's discount to 10%. Add Change discount rewards of 15% at Order 4 and 20% at Order 7, both Ongoing (all future orders).

Free shipping from the 3rd delivery
Add a Free shipping reward at Order 3 with Duration Ongoing (all future orders). Keep One-off (single order) if only that one delivery should ship free.

A thank-you gift on the 4th order
Add a Free product reward at Order 4, Duration One-off (single order).

Every 6th order free (orders 6, 12, 18 and so on)
Start from the Loyalty rewards template and leave Start over after the last reward off. Add a Change discount reward at Order 6: Percentage, 100, Duration One-off (single order). Add a Free shipping reward at the same order if shipping should be free too. Then add the same reward at Order 12, Order 18 and so on, as far ahead as you want it to run: there is no "every 6th order" switch.

  • Do not turn on Start over after the last reward for this. It does not repeat every 6 orders: with a single reward at Order 6 it repeats on orders 6, 11, 16.
  • To keep customers subscribed for the first six orders, also turn on Minimum commitment on the subscription option with Minimum orders set to 6, see Requiring a minimum number of payments before cancellation.
  • To charge once for every six deliveries instead (a 16.67% discount makes that about the price of five), use a prepaid subscription rather than a loyalty program.
  • Before you advertise it, place a test subscription order and use Renew immediately until Order 6 to check the free order.

A reward for spend (for example a free product every $100 spent)
Start from the Spend rewards template, keep one tier at 100 with a Free product reward, and turn on Start over after the last reward so it repeats.

Editing, turning off or deleting a program

  • Editing a program affects new subscriptions only. Each subscription keeps the program as it was when the subscription started, so changing a reward does not change subscribers who already joined.
  • To change one existing subscriber, open the subscription in Subscriptions, click Edit, open the Loyalty flow card, choose a program (or Custom to set rewards for that subscription alone, or No loyalty program) and save. There is no bulk update for this.
  • Turning a program off (More actions > Turn off journey in the editor) or deleting it (in the editor, or select it in Grow > Journeys and click Delete) stops new subscriptions from joining. Subscriptions already on it keep their terms.
  • Attaching a program to a subscription option later does not add existing subscribers on that option. Update them one by one as above.

Limitations

  • Subscriptions only: one-time orders do not earn or receive rewards.
  • No points, and no store-wide loyalty. For points across all purchases, use a dedicated loyalty app alongside this one.
  • Amount off and Fixed price rewards use the amount exactly as you enter it. For subscribers who pay in another currency, use Percentage rewards.
  • No rewards based on the number of units bought (for example every 11th bag free). The closest is a program by amount spent, with a spending tier. You can vote for new reward types on the Feature requests page in the app.

Common questions

I created a loyalty program but nothing happens. Why?
The program has to run on a subscription option: Runs on in the journey's trigger, or Loyalty rewards under Loyalty in the option's additional settings in Offers. It must also be turned on. It then applies to subscriptions created after that.

Why can't I choose Order 1?
Order 1 is the checkout order and is always priced by the subscription option's own discount. Put a first order discount on the option and use the program to change it from Order 2.

Does a Change discount add to my subscription discount?
No. It replaces the subscription option's discount. A 10% option with a 15% reward gives 15% off. Shopify discount codes on the subscription are separate and still apply.

My discount changed on Order 2 but went back on Order 3. Why?
The reward's Duration is One-off (single order). Edit the reward and choose Ongoing (all future orders). Existing subscribers keep the old setting, so update them from their subscription page.

I edited my program. Do existing subscribers get the change?
No, edits apply to new subscriptions. Change an existing subscriber from their subscription page (Edit > Loyalty flow).

Can subscribers get free shipping from their 3rd delivery?
Yes: a Free shipping reward at Order 3 with Duration Ongoing (all future orders).

Can I reward customers for every product they buy, like a points program?
No. Loyalty programs reward subscriptions by order number or by spend. For store-wide points, use a loyalty app.

What happens to subscribers if I delete a program?
They keep the terms they have. New subscriptions stop joining the program.
