Tag Settings
The app can tag your Shopify customers and orders by subscription status, for example has active subscription on a customer or recurring order on a renewal order. Use these tags to filter customers and orders in Shopify, build customer segments, and target subscribers in email marketing tools such as Shopify Email or Klaviyo.

How subscription tags work
Every tag is off until you tick it. Tick the tags you want, click Save in the save bar, and confirm with Update tags.
When you save, the app updates the tags on your existing subscription customers and orders straight away, so you do not have to wait for new orders. Allow a few minutes for all tags to update. Turning a tag off, or changing its text, removes the old tag in the same way.
After that the tags stay up to date by themselves: they are added and removed as subscriptions start, renew, pause, get cancelled or fail.
Customer tags
Setting | Tag added (default text) | Added to customers who have |
|---|---|---|
Has subscription contract | has subscription contract | any subscription, in any status |
Has active subscription | has active subscription | at least 1 active subscription |
Has paused subscription | has paused subscription | at least 1 paused subscription |
Has cancelled subscription | has cancelled subscription | at least 1 cancelled subscription |
Has completed subscription | has completed subscription | at least 1 completed subscription (one that reached its end) |
Has failed subscription | has failed subscription | at least 1 failed subscription (for example when payment fails) |
A customer can carry several of these at once, for example one active and one cancelled subscription.
Order tags
Tags applied to orders based on their role in a subscription:
Setting | Tag added (default text) | Added to |
|---|---|---|
Subscription order | subscription order | every order that is part of a subscription |
Subscription order number | subscription order #1, #2, #3... | every subscription order, counting the first order as #1 |
Initial order | initial subscription order | the first order of a subscription |
Recurring order | recurring order | every renewal order |
Subscription renewal number | subscription renewal #1, #2, #3... | renewal orders only, counting the first renewal as #1 (the first order is not included) |
There is no tag with the subscription's ID. To match orders to subscriptions from another system, use the API.
Changing the tag text
Click the pencil button under a tag to open Edit tag, type the new text and click Edit. The two number tags must keep their number placeholder ({ contract_order_number } or { contract_renewal_number }), which the app replaces with the order's number.
Using tags to email or segment subscribers
The app does not send marketing or bulk emails itself. Instead, tag your subscribers and use the tags in your email tool:
- Turn on the customer tags you need, for example Has active subscription and Has paused subscription, then save and confirm with Update tags.
- In your Shopify admin, go to Customers > Segments and create a segment where the customer tags contain the tag, for example
has paused subscription. - Send to that segment from Shopify Email, or use the tag in your marketing app. Apps that sync Shopify customer tags, such as Klaviyo, can build lists or segments from them.
A few examples:
- Win back paused or cancelled subscribers: a segment on has paused subscription or has cancelled subscription.
- Upsell one-time buyers: customers without has subscription contract have never subscribed.
- Tell first orders from renewals in reports or in apps that read order tags (for example affiliate or fulfilment apps): use Initial order, Recurring order and the number tags.
Subscription tags are separate from your newsletter list: a subscriber has not necessarily agreed to marketing emails, so respect each customer's email marketing consent.
Common questions
- Why don't my renewal orders have a subscription tag?
Order tags are off until you turn them on here. Tick Subscription order or Recurring order, click Save and confirm with Update tags. Existing subscription orders are tagged too.
- How do I email only customers with an active subscription?
Turn on Has active subscription, then build a segment on the has active subscription tag in Customers > Segments or in your email app.
- How do I build a segment of paused (or cancelled, or failed) subscribers?
Turn on the matching customer tag and create a Shopify segment where the customer tags contain it. The tag is removed automatically when the customer no longer has a subscription in that status.
- Can my affiliate or referral app tell a first order from a renewal?
Yes, if it can read order tags: turn on Initial order, Recurring order, Subscription order number or Subscription renewal number. Other apps cannot read the subscription itself, because Shopify only shares it with the app that created it. See Using the API for linking orders to subscriptions from your own systems.
- Do tags apply to customers who subscribed before I turned them on?
Yes. Saving the setting updates your existing subscription customers and orders within a few minutes.
