Out of Stock Settings

To access this settings page, go to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Settings > Out of stock

Renewals check your Shopify inventory. When a product on a subscription is out of stock on its renewal date, the Contract renewals setting on this page decides what happens. There are three choices: Skip subscription cycle (the default), Partial renewals and Allow overselling. Pick one and click Save in the save bar.

Table of contents

Skip subscription cycle

The default. If any product on the subscription is out of stock at renewal:

  • The whole renewal is skipped. The customer is not charged and no order is created.
  • The next billing date moves forward by one billing interval from the skipped date (keeping any specific renewal dates the subscription option uses). Stock is checked again then.
  • The customer gets the Subscription out of stock email and you get the staff Subscription out of stock email. Both can be edited or turned off in Settings > Notifications.

Partial renewals

The subscription renews with the products that are in stock and leaves out the ones that are not:

  • The customer is charged only for the in-stock products, and the renewal order contains only those.
  • The out-of-stock product is not charged for this cycle. It stays on the subscription and is included again at the next renewal, when stock is checked again.
  • If every product on the subscription is out of stock, the whole cycle is skipped as in Skip subscription cycle.

For example, if a subscription has three products and one is out of stock, the renewal charges and ships the other two.

Allow overselling

Subscriptions renew successfully even when their products are out of stock. The customer is charged in full, the renewal order is created, and your Shopify inventory can go below zero. This applies to automatic renewals and to Renew immediately.

Choose this when you can always get more stock in time to ship, for example products made to order.

Which option should I choose?

  • You can restock before shipping: Allow overselling. No renewal is ever held back by a stock count.
  • Customers would rather get part of their order than nothing: Partial renewals.
  • You never want to charge for something you can't ship right away: Skip subscription cycle.

Allowing overselling for some products only

To let only certain products renew while out of stock, keep Skip subscription cycle or Partial renewals here and turn on Shopify's own setting on those products:

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Products and open the product.
  2. In the Inventory section, check Continue selling when out of stock.
  3. Save.

Renewals of that product then go through even when its tracked inventory is at or below zero. Products that don't track inventory are never treated as out of stock.

What counts as out of stock

  • A product whose tracked inventory is zero or below and that does not allow Continue selling when out of stock.
  • A variant that was deleted or replaced in Shopify always counts as out of stock, because the subscription still points at the old variant. Open the subscription, click Edit and switch the line to the current variant.

On the Subscriptions list, the Out of stock and Partially out of stock badges and the Inventory level filter show the products' stock right now, so you can spot subscriptions that will be affected at their next renewal. They do not change what happened at a past renewal.

Common questions

What happens when a subscription product is out of stock at renewal?
It depends on the setting above. By default the whole renewal is skipped, the customer is not charged, and the next renewal moves on by one interval. See What happens to a renewal when a product is out of stock.

Is the customer charged for the item that was skipped in a partial renewal?
No. Only the products that were in stock are charged. The skipped product comes back on the next renewal.

How do I send the skipped item now, without charging the whole subscription again?
Edit that renewal order in Shopify (Orders > open the order > Edit > add the product) or create a draft order for it. Don't use Renew immediately: it charges the whole subscription as a new renewal.

I restocked. Will skipped subscriptions renew straight away?
No, they renew on their next billing date. To charge one now, click Renew immediately on it (or use the Renew immediately bulk action for many active subscriptions).

A renewal failed with an inventory error, but I have stock.
Check that the subscription's variant still exists: a deleted or replaced variant always counts as out of stock. Also check stock at the location that fulfills the order. Then click Renew immediately.

I chose Allow overselling but a renewal still failed with an inventory or location error.
An error such as Inventory allocations not found means no location can deliver the order to that address with that delivery method. Overselling does not fix it. See Understanding billing attempt failures.

Can the app swap in a replacement product automatically?
No. To replace a product, edit the subscription, or use the Swap product bulk action on the Subscriptions list.
