Subscription Analytics

To access this page, go to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Analytics

The Analytics page tracks how your subscription business is doing: recurring revenue, growth, churn, renewals, failed payments and why customers cancel. It also has tabs for products, subscription options, loyalty and bundles.

Date range and comparison

The page opens on Last 30 days. Click the date button to choose Last 7 days, Last 30 days, Last 90 days or Last 365 days, or pick any start and end date on the calendar, then click Apply.

The button next to it switches between No comparison and Previous period. With Previous period, each chart adds a second line for the same length of time just before your range, so you can see what changed.

Overview charts

The Overview tab shows one chart per metric. Hover over a chart's title to see what it measures.

  • Monthly recurring revenue: the monthly value of all active subscriptions.
  • Subscription order revenue: total revenue from orders that are part of a subscription, including first orders and renewals.
  • Subscription growth: the number of live subscriptions over time. It counts active and paused subscriptions.
  • Subscriptions activated: how many subscriptions started.
  • Paused subscriptions: how many subscriptions are paused.
  • Cancellations: how many subscriptions were cancelled.
  • Customer lifetime value: average revenue per subscription over its lifetime.
  • Churn rate: a rolling 30-day churn rate. Cancellations in the 30 days before each date, divided by the subscriptions live at the start of that window plus those that started during it.
  • Average order value: average revenue per subscription order.
  • Renewals: how many renewals were processed.
  • Reactivations: subscriptions that went back to active after being paused or stopped.
  • Skipped orders: orders customers skipped in the customer portal.
  • Out of stock issues: renewals skipped or partly fulfilled because of low stock.
  • Failed payments: failed billing attempts. To follow them up, see Where to find failed or past-due subscriptions.

Cancellation reasons

The Cancellation reasons card at the end of the Overview tab breaks down why subscriptions were cancelled in the selected period (for example Too Expensive, No Longer Needed, Customer Request or Merchant Request, plus the reasons you set up in your cancellation flows). With Previous period on, it also shows the change.

You can also see the reason:

  • on each cancelled subscription's page, in its Timeline, and
  • in the cancellationReason column when you export your subscriptions.

A reason only appears if the customer gave one. To ask for one, set up a cancellation flow under Grow > Cancellation flows, see Cancellation and pause flows.

Detailed reports

Click the title of any chart (or of Cancellation reasons) to open its full report on its own page, with its own date range. Use Print on that page to print it or save it as a PDF, and Analytics at the top to go back.

Cohorts

Click Cohorts at the top of the Analytics page (it is also the first entry under Reports) to see how subscriptions behave over time, grouped by the month they started. Each row is one month's new subscriptions; each column is a number of months after they started. Choose what the cells show:

  • Retention: the share of that month's subscriptions still active or paused that many months later. Each subscription is measured from its own start date.
  • Revenue per subscription: what each starting subscription has been billed in its first months, the first order included, in your store currency.
  • Orders per subscription: how many orders each starting subscription has placed in its first months, the first order included.

Use Started in the last to look back 6, 12 or 24 months. A cell stays empty until every subscription in its row has reached that month, so recent months fill in over time. Test orders are left out. Darker cells mean higher values, which makes a drop in retention after a particular month easy to spot.

Products, Selling plans, Loyalty and Bundles tabs

  • Products: Revenue by product, Subscriptions by product, and a list of All products. Click a product for its own report.
  • Selling plans: the same for your subscription options (Shopify calls each one a selling plan): Revenue by selling plan, Active subscriptions by selling plan, and All selling plans.
  • Loyalty: Rewards over time, Rewards by type and Rewards by order for your loyalty programs.
  • Bundles: opens Bundle analytics with Bundle orders, Bundle revenue, Discount given, Average bundle order value, Top bundle products and a Per bundle table.

The Products and Selling plans tabs use the date range you picked on Overview.

Common questions

Where can I see why customers cancelled?
In the Cancellation reasons card at the bottom of the Overview tab (click its title for the full report), in each cancelled subscription's Timeline, and in the export.

Why is the number of active subscriptions higher here than in the inventory planner?
Subscription growth counts active and paused subscriptions. The inventory planner counts active subscriptions only, and only the ones renewing in its date range. Use the planner for stock planning.

Can I pick a custom date range?
Yes. Click the date button and select a start and end date on the calendar, then Apply.

Does Analytics include one-time orders?
The Overview charts cover subscriptions. Orders that used your bundle options are on the Bundles tab.

A number looks wrong or a chart is empty. What should I do?
Check the date range and the comparison setting first. If it still looks wrong, contact support with the chart name and the date range, and we will look into it.
