Billing and Renewal Settings
This page decides whether existing subscriptions follow your product price changes, which time zone renewals use, and what time of day renewals are charged. Click Save in the save bar after changing anything.

Automatic price updates
By default, a subscription keeps the price the customer signed up at. Choose one of:
- Prices are fixed at the time of purchase (the default): customers keep the price they paid at checkout for the lifetime of their subscription, unless you change it yourself.
- Prices are updated automatically as they change: when you change a product's price in Shopify, the active and paused subscriptions that contain it are repriced to match. The customer is charged the new price from their next renewal.
What to know about automatic updates:
- They react to price changes made after you turn the setting on. Turning it on does not reprice anything by itself. To bring existing subscriptions up to today's prices, use the Sync prices bulk action on the Subscriptions list. See Changing prices for existing subscribers.
- They are not instant. Product changes are processed in batches, so allow some time after changing a price before the subscriptions show it.
- The subscription discount is recalculated on the new price. A Percentage discount stays the same percentage and an Amount off discount stays the same amount off. A Fixed price discount keeps charging its fixed price, so those subscriptions do not change.
- Customers are told. Each repriced customer gets the Subscription price updated email ("The price of your subscription is changing"). Edit it or turn it off in Settings > Notifications.
- Other currencies (Shopify Markets): a subscription in another currency is updated to the product's price for the customer's country in that currency. If no such price exists, that subscription is left unchanged. See Selling subscriptions with B2B, Markets, and multiple currencies.
Time zone
Select the time zone used to calculate order processing and renewal times. When processing orders in bulk, subscription renewals and order processing rely on this time zone. It starts on your Shopify store's time zone.
Subscription renewal time
Choose how and when renewals are processed:
- Based on time of purchase (the default): each subscription renews at the same time of day as the original purchase.
- In bulk (daily): all renewals for the day are processed together at a single time. Pick the time in Bulk renew all subscriptions for the day at (00:15 to 23:15), in the time zone above.
This only changes the time of day. The renewal date still follows each subscription's schedule. See When customers are charged vs when orders are fulfilled.
Common questions
I raised my prices. Why are existing subscribers still charged the old price?
Subscriptions keep their signup price unless Prices are updated automatically as they change is selected. Even with it on, only price changes made afterwards are applied. Use the Sync prices bulk action to update existing subscriptions now.
I turned on automatic price updates but nothing changed.
The setting reacts to the next price change in Shopify, it does not reprice existing subscriptions on its own. Change the product's price again, or run Sync prices on the Subscriptions list.
Why did one subscription keep its old price after the update?
It most likely uses a Fixed price discount, which always charges the fixed amount. Change its discount with Edit discount on the subscription's edit page, or switch it to Percentage or Amount off.
Do new subscribers get the new price?
Yes. New subscriptions always start at the product's current price with the subscription option's discount, whatever this setting says.
Can I choose the time of day customers are charged?
Yes. Select In bulk (daily) and pick a time in Bulk renew all subscriptions for the day at.
