Dunning Settings
When a renewal payment fails, the app retries it automatically. The Dunning page decides how many times to retry, how long to wait between attempts, and what happens if the payment still fails. By default a failed renewal is retried 3 times, 1 day apart, and then the subscription is marked Failed.

Payment retries
Both settings are in the Failing payments card.
- Number of billing attempts: how many times a failed renewal is retried, from 1 attempt to 10 attempts (default 3 attempts). Choose Do not make multiple attempts to bill failing payments to skip retries and go straight to the action below.
- Time to wait between billing attempts: 1 hour, 6 hours, 12 hours, 1 day (default), 2 days, 3 days, 5 days, 1 week or 2 weeks.
When all payment attempts fail
Decide what happens when the last retry also fails:
- Fail subscription contract (default): the subscription is marked Failed and stops renewing until you click Activate subscription on it.
- Pause subscription contract: the subscription is Paused and can be resumed later with Activate subscription.
- Attempt again at next renewal date: this billing cycle is skipped. The subscription stays active and the charge is tried again on its next regular renewal date.
Retries stop as soon as a payment succeeds. You can also charge straight away with Renew immediately (active subscriptions) or Activate subscription (failed or paused). See Charging the renewal again.
Charging again when the card is updated
Charge again when the payment method is updated (in the Failing payments card, on by default) charges a failed renewal straight away when its payment method changes, instead of waiting for the next attempt. That happens when:
- the customer updates the card through the link in the renewal failed email, or
- you or the customer switch the subscription to another saved payment method, from the subscription page or the customer portal.
It covers renewals still being retried and subscriptions marked Failed after their last attempt, which are made active again and charged. Paused subscriptions are left alone. Each failed renewal is charged this way at most once per attempt, the subscription's timeline shows it, and if the charge fails again the usual retries carry on. Nothing is charged while renewals are frozen under Settings > Pause Supr.
Emails sent during dunning
- After each failed attempt that will be retried: the customer gets a renewal failed email and you get a staff notification. Card problems the customer can fix send the Action Required version with a link to update their payment method. See Which failures email the customer.
- When all attempts fail: Subscription failed (plus the staff Failed subscription email), Subscription paused, or Next billing date changed when the cycle is skipped.
All of them can be edited or turned off in Settings > Notifications.
Common questions
Will the app retry a failed payment by itself?
Yes. By default it retries 3 times, 1 day apart. Change this under Number of billing attempts and Time to wait between billing attempts.
Should failed subscriptions be cancelled or paused automatically?
Choose Pause subscription contract to keep the customer's subscription so it can be resumed, or Fail subscription contract to stop it. There is no automatic cancel option here.
A customer updated their card. Do I have to wait for the next retry?
No. With Charge again when the payment method is updated on (the default), the renewal is charged as soon as the card is updated. You can also click Renew immediately on the subscription (or Activate subscription if it is failed or paused) to charge now.
Does each retry email the customer?
Yes, each failed attempt sends the customer a renewal failed email, unless you turn that email off in Settings > Notifications.
