Renewals charge shipping or the wrong shipping rate
Each subscription saves its own shipping rate and price when the customer checks out, and every renewal charges that saved price. So if the first order shipped free but renewals charge shipping, or a new rate or free shipping discount is not reaching your existing subscribers, the fix is almost always to update the shipping saved on those subscriptions. This guide lists the usual causes, then shows how to fix one subscription or many at once.

How renewal shipping works
- At checkout, Shopify saves a shipping rate and price on the subscription, plus any shipping discount that applied (for example a free shipping discount for subscriptions, with the number of orders you chose for it).
- Each renewal charges the saved shipping price, minus any shipping discount that is still running.
- Changing your shipping rates, profiles or discounts later does not change subscriptions that already exist.
You can see a subscription's shipping on its page in Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Subscriptions: the Shipping line shows the rate name and price. If a shipping discount is on the subscription, the Shipping line can still show the rate's normal price while the discount is listed separately, so check the total.
Common causes
1. The free shipping discount only covered the first order.
In Shopify admin > Discounts, open your free shipping discount and look at Recurring payments for subscriptions. Limit discount to the first payment (or Limit discount to multiple recurring payments) means renewals pay shipping once those orders are used up. Choose Discount applies to all recurring payments for new subscribers, and update existing ones as below.
2. The discount was created after the subscription started.
Discounts are saved on a subscription at checkout, so a free shipping discount you create today does not reach existing subscribers. The same goes for subscriptions migrated from another app: the old app's free shipping discount is not part of the import, so they renew with the shipping price stored on them.
3. "Keep the initial shipping option" copied the first order's shipping.
With Settings > Shipping > Recurring shipping options set to Keep the initial shipping option, a new subscription copies the shipping price actually paid on its first order. If that order also contained one-time items, every renewal pays the shipping for the bigger order. If the first order shipped free with a first-order-only discount, renewals stay free. Switch to Automatically select the cheapest shipping option for new subscriptions if this is not what you want.
4. Your rates changed after the customer subscribed.
New rates, a new subscription shipping profile, or a moved product only apply to new subscriptions.
5. The customer changed their subscription in the portal.
Adding or swapping products, or changing quantities, does not refresh the shipping price unless When a customer updates their subscription through the customer portal is ticked under Automatic shipping price updates.
6. A pickup subscription still has a shipping price.
Switching a subscription to store pickup does not reset the price. See Store pickup and local delivery for subscriptions.
7. The first order was already charged shipping.
If checkout itself charged shipping, the discount did not apply there, for example because it is not set to combine with your bundle discount. See My subscription free shipping discount is not working.
8. A free shipping discount is cancelling out a rate you added.
An automatic free shipping discount from the first order stays on the subscription. If you later add or change the shipping rate, the discount takes it straight back off, so the subscription shows a shipping price and a matching minus, and renewals still ship free. Remove the discount as described in Fix one subscription.
Fix one subscription
- Open the subscription in Subscriptions and click Edit.
- In the Payment card, click Edit shipping (or Add shipping if it has none).
- Choose one of your current rates, Free shipping, or Custom and enter a Rate name and Price. Click Done.
- If a Shipping discount row sits under the shipping line (for example Free Shipping) and you want the customer to pay the rate, click the x next to it to remove it. The Summary card then lists it as removed.
- Click Update contract.
The new price is charged from the next renewal. The customer gets the Subscription contract updated email unless you have turned it off in Settings > Notifications.
Fix many subscriptions at once
- Go to Subscriptions. To find the ones to change, filter by Shipping price (Free shipping or an Amount range), and by Status or Delivery type if useful.
- Select the subscriptions (or all of them in the current view) and choose Update shipping price from the bulk actions.
- Choose how to update:
- Recalculate from current shipping rates: looks up the latest rate for each subscription's address and applies it. Pickup subscriptions are set to free shipping.
- Set a new shipping price: applies the same price to every selected subscription, in each subscription's own currency. Enter 0 for free shipping.
- Tick Send a notification to the customer if you want customers emailed about the change, then click Update shipping.
Good to know:
- The update runs in the background and can take a few minutes for large selections. Refresh the page to see the new prices.
- Active, paused and failed subscriptions are updated. Subscriptions already at the right price are skipped.
- Recalculate from current shipping rates skips local delivery subscriptions, and it applies the rate Shopify returns for the address, which may not be the option the customer originally picked. Use Set a new shipping price when you want one exact price.
- Nothing already charged is refunded. To give back shipping on a past order, refund it in Shopify. See Refunding or cancelling a single subscription order.
Keep future renewals right
- Free shipping on every renewal: set your Shopify free shipping discount to Discount applies to all recurring payments. See How to set up free subscription shipping.
- Follow rate changes automatically: in Settings > Shipping, tick After a subscription renewal and, if customers edit their subscriptions, When a customer updates their subscription through the customer portal under Automatic shipping price updates. The rate is refreshed after each renewal, so a change reaches a subscription from its following renewal.
- Subscription-only rates: use a subscription shipping profile. See Shipping Settings.
Common questions
The first order had free shipping. Why are renewals charged shipping?
Most often the free shipping discount is limited to the first payment. Check Recurring payments for subscriptions on the discount, then update existing subscriptions with Update shipping price.
I created a new free shipping discount. Why don't existing subscriptions get it?
Shopify applies discounts at checkout, so only new subscriptions get it. Set existing ones to free with Update shipping price > Set a new shipping price > 0.
I changed my shipping rates. How do I apply the new price to existing subscriptions?
Select them on the Subscriptions list and use Update shipping price > Recalculate from current shipping rates.
One subscription has an odd shipping rate. How do I fix just that one?
Open it, click Edit > Edit shipping, pick the right rate, Free shipping or Custom, click Done, then Update contract.
I added a shipping rate but the subscription still ships free. Why?
A free shipping discount from the first order is still on the subscription and cancels the rate out: you see the shipping price and the same amount taken off. Open the subscription, click Edit, click the x next to the discount in the Shipping discount row under the shipping line in the Payment card, then click Update contract.
My migrated subscribers lost their free shipping.
The previous app's discount was not carried over. Set those subscriptions to free with Update shipping price, and refund any shipping already charged from the Shopify order.
Why is shipping higher on renewals than it should be?
If you use Keep the initial shipping option, the subscription copied the shipping from a first order that may have included one-time items. Fix the price on the subscription and consider Automatically select the cheapest shipping option.
