Editing a Subscription Contract
You can change the products, variants, quantities, prices, frequency, discount and shipping of any existing subscription (Shopify calls each one a subscription contract). You do not need the customer's approval or the customer portal to do this. The edit page uses the same cards as creating a contract, except the customer cannot be changed. Instead of the customer cards, a Summary card on the right lists every change you are about to make, for example switching from weekly to monthly deliveries.

More walkthroughs, including discounts, shipping and delivery frequency, are in the video guide for editing a contract.
When to Use This Guide
Use this guide to:
- Change the frequency or terms of a subscriber's contract
- Swap products or variants, or adjust quantities and prices
- Add, change or remove a discount
- Update the shipping rate
Editing Steps
- Change the subscription terms
- In the Subscription card, click the name of the current subscription option to switch to another one from your offers, or to Custom subscription option.
- The menu (⋯) lets you change the terms of this subscription only: Edit renewals and billing frequency (how often, and pay per order or prepaid), Edit contract duration limits, and Edit subscription renewal dates (renew on a fixed day).
- Adjust products
- Click Add product to add a product or variant, and click the X at the end of a line to remove one.
- Change quantities in the Quantity box.
- Click a price to change the base price, or click the discount icon on a line to add a manual discount for that product.
- Adjust payment and delivery
- In the Payment card, click Edit discount to change the subscription discount (No discount, Percentage, Amount off or Fixed price) or its discount codes.
- Click Edit shipping to pick another shipping rate, Free shipping, or a Custom rate.
- A free shipping discount from the first order shows as a Shipping discount row under the shipping line. Click the x next to it to remove it, for example when it is cancelling out a rate you added.
- Check the new totals.
- Review the Summary
- The Summary card lists every pending change, for example "Changed the subscription frequency", "Added 1 product" or "Updated shipping method".
- Save
- Click Update contract in the Summary card. The changes apply from the next renewal, and the customer receives the Subscription contract updated email unless you have turned it off in Settings > Notifications.
Editing does not move the next billing date, even when you change the frequency. To change when the next order happens, use Edit schedule on the subscription page, see Changing the next billing or charge date.
Swapping a product or variant
There is no swap button on a single subscription. To swap:
- Click Add product and pick the new product or variant (for example the new size).
- Set its quantity.
- Remove the old line with the X.
- Check the new line's price. If it should carry a discount, click the discount icon on the line or use Edit discount.
- Click Update contract.
The next renewal charges the new product at the new price. To swap a product on many subscriptions at once, use the bulk Swap product action (see below).
Bundles in a subscription
A bundle shows as one item, on the subscription page and in the editor: its name, what kind of bundle it is (for example Build a box, Fixed bundle or Quantity break), how many items it holds and its total, with its products listed underneath. In the editor its products are changed together, from the bundle's own controls, and like every other edit nothing is saved until you click Update contract:
- Edit (build a box bundles) opens the box, with a picture of each item: change its size to another size from the same offer, swap items for others the offer allows, and change how many of each where the offer lets customers choose. Click Apply changes and the new items and the box's price, worked out from the offer exactly as when the customer edits their own box, show in the products list, the totals and the Summary.
- A bundle whose option has its own image in the offer shows that image next to its name.
- The quantity next to a bundle sets how many of that bundle the subscription holds, with every product in step. For a build a box bundle each box keeps the same items, and Edit changes them in every box.
- A quantity break's quantity is its number of units, and its discount follows it as it would at checkout: the subscription gets the best discount among the quantity break sizes the quantity reaches. With Buy 2 and Buy 3 options, 5 units get the Buy 3 discount, and 1 unit is an ordinary product again. The same goes for a product on its own that a published quantity break offer covers: raise it to one of the offer's sizes and the discount is added.
- The X on the bundle removes the whole bundle, gifts and add-ons included.
- Edit separately unlocks the bundle's products for a change the bundle controls cannot make. A product changed on its own leaves a bundle that no longer matches its offer, and its bundle price stays as it was, so check the total before you save.
Adding a bundle
Click Add bundle next to Add product at the top of the Products card and choose one of your bundle offers: a build a box (pick its items), a fixed bundle (pick each product's variant) or a quantity break (pick the product). The bundle is added at the subscription's own price with the offer's discount, and shows in the products list and totals before you click Update contract. Offers with a free gift, add-ons, buy X get Y bundles and a box built around the product page's own product cannot be added this way yet, and an offer only appears when it is published, inside its dates and allows the subscription's option.
Every product shows the same price after I add one
The contract uses a Fixed price discount, which sets one price for every product on the subscription. Click Edit discount in the Payment card and switch to Percentage or Amount off if the products should keep their own prices. See How subscription discounts work.
Editing many subscriptions at once
To add, remove, or swap a product across many subscriptions, tick them on the Subscriptions list and choose Edit product > Add product, Swap product or Remove product. Change subscription moves the selected subscriptions to another subscription option. More bulk actions are listed in Managing a customer's subscription on their behalf.
Common questions
I changed the product or price, but the subscription still charges less than I set. Why?
The subscription still carries its subscription discount, which now comes off the new price. Click Edit discount, change or remove the discount, click Save, then Update contract. See How to add or remove a discount on an existing subscription.
A customer is on the wrong variant (for example 1 bottle instead of 3). How do I fix it?
Add the right variant, remove the wrong one, check the price and click Update contract. The next renewal charges the new variant.
I deleted a product in Shopify. Is it removed from subscriptions?
No. A deleted product stays on existing subscriptions until you replace it here.
Can I merge two subscriptions of the same customer into one?
Yes, if they share the same frequency, address and payment method. Open the one you want to keep, click Edit, add the products from the other subscription, click Update contract, then cancel the other subscription.
Can I change the customer on a subscription?
No. A subscription stays with the Shopify customer who owns it, and Shopify does not merge customer records that have subscriptions. You can keep managing it on their behalf, or create a new contract for the right customer and cancel the old one.
Will the customer be told about my changes?
Yes, they receive the Subscription contract updated email, unless you turn that notification off first.
