Store pickup and local delivery for subscriptions

Subscriptions don't have to ship: customers can also collect orders from your store (click and collect) or receive them by local delivery. This guide explains what's supported, how pickup is billed, how to switch a subscription between shipping, pickup and local delivery, and what happens if you turn local delivery off.

Supported delivery methods

A subscription can use any of these delivery methods, just like a normal Shopify order:

  • Shipping: delivered by your carriers using your shipping profiles.
  • Local delivery: delivered within your local delivery zones.
  • Store pickup: collected from one of your store locations.

The method a customer gets is based on how your store and products are set up in Shopify, and the option they choose at checkout. To see which subscriptions use which method, filter the Subscriptions list by Delivery type (Shipping, Pickup from store or Local delivery).

Store pickup

Pickup from your own store locations is supported.

  • A pickup subscription needs no shipping labels, and the subscription shows a Pickup location badge with the location instead of a shipping address.
  • The customer collects each renewal order from the location, the same way they would a one-time pickup order.

Third-party pickup points (parcel lockers, carrier pickup points, etc.) are not supported for subscriptions. This is a limitation of the Shopify subscriptions platform: only your own store pickup locations work.

Local delivery

Local delivery works for subscriptions using your store's local delivery setup in Shopify admin > Settings > Shipping and delivery. Renewal orders follow your local delivery zones just like one-time local delivery orders, and the subscription shows a Local delivery badge.

Turning off local delivery or pickup

Renewals need the delivery method to still be available. If you turn off local delivery in Shopify (or at the location the subscriptions use), every local delivery subscription fails at its next renewal, and no order is created. The error can look like a stock or location problem (for example "No inventory location found or enabled" or Inventory allocations not found), but the cause is the delivery setting. The same applies to pickup subscriptions when pickup is turned off at their location.

To fix it, either:

Changing the method does not charge the missed renewal. Once fixed, click Renew immediately on an active subscription, or Activate subscription on a failed or paused one. See Charging the renewal again.

Planning to stop local delivery? Move those subscriptions to shipping first, or contact support if you have many to move and we will help.

Changing the delivery method on a subscription

To switch a subscription between shipping, pickup and local delivery, or to change its pickup location:

  1. Open the subscription in Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Subscriptions.
  2. On the Customer card, click the pencil icon next to Shipping address. This opens Edit shipping address.
  3. Choose Customer delivery (shipping to an address), Pickup location or Local delivery.
  4. Enter the address, or pick the location for pickup, then click Save.

The customer gets the Subscription contract updated email (you can turn it off in Settings > Notifications).

Then check the shipping price. Changing the method does not change the shipping price saved on the subscription. After switching to pickup, set it to free: click Edit, then Edit shipping in the Payment card, choose Free shipping, click Done and Update contract. After switching to shipping, pick the right rate the same way.

Edit > Edit shipping only changes the shipping price and rate name, not the delivery method. Choosing a £0 rate there leaves the subscription as a delivery. To switch to pickup, use the pencil on the Customer card as above.

For many pickup subscriptions at once, select them on the Subscriptions list and use the Update shipping price bulk action with Recalculate from current shipping rates: pickup subscriptions are set to free shipping. Local delivery subscriptions are skipped by that recalculation.

Customers changing it in the portal

With Update shipping address on (under Settings > Customer portal), customers change the delivery method themselves from the pencil next to their address:

  • Ship to address: pick one of their saved addresses. Where your local delivery zones cover that address, they also choose between Shipping and Local delivery.
  • Pick up: choose one of your pickup locations (shown when you have any).

The price is set for them: free for pickup, and the cheapest rate Shopify offers for shipping or local delivery to that address. They see the next order's new total before they confirm, and you see the change on the subscription's timeline.

Common questions

Can customers pick up their subscription orders in store?
Yes, from your own store locations. Parcel lockers and carrier pickup points are not supported by Shopify subscriptions.

Can customers switch between shipping, pickup and local delivery themselves?
Yes, from the customer portal, when they can update their address. See Customers changing it in the portal.

How do I change an existing subscription from shipping to store pickup?
Click the pencil next to Shipping address on the subscription's Customer card, choose Pickup location, pick the location and Save. Then set the shipping price to free. See Changing the delivery method on a subscription.

A pickup subscription still charges shipping. How do I fix it?
Open it, click Edit > Edit shipping, choose Free shipping, Done, then Update contract.

All my local delivery subscriptions failed to renew at once.
Local delivery was most likely turned off in Shopify. Turn it back on, or move those subscriptions to shipping. See Turning off local delivery or pickup.

The subscription says "Location no longer exists".
The pickup location was removed in Shopify, and renewals cannot continue until you change it. Click Update address on that banner (or the pencil next to Shipping address) and choose another location or a delivery address.
