Refunding or cancelling a single subscription order

To refund or cancel one subscription order, do it in Shopify admin > Orders, exactly as for any other order. The subscription itself is separate: it keeps its status, price and next billing date, and it keeps renewing. If you also want to stop or move the next charge, change that on the subscription in the app.

Refund or cancel one order

  1. In Shopify admin, go to Orders and open the subscription order (the first order or a renewal).
  2. To give money back, click Refund, choose the items and whether to refund shipping, and confirm.
  3. To cancel the order instead, use Shopify's Cancel order option on the order page.

Shopify returns the money to the customer's payment method, as for any order. See Shopify's guide to refunding and cancelling orders.

What it does to the subscription

Nothing changes on the subscription:

  • It stays Active (or whatever status it had) and renews on its next billing date as usual.
  • The next billing date does not move and is not added back.
  • The price and products on the subscription stay the same.
  • The refunded order still counts as one of the subscription's orders, for example toward a bar's Minimum commitment or Automatic expiry.

Refunding the first order does not cancel the subscription that was created from it. If the customer wants out, cancel the subscription as well.

Stopping or moving the next charge

Open the subscription in Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Subscriptions, then:

  • Move the next order: click Edit schedule in the Upcoming renewals card and choose Set specific date or Shift by relative amount. See Changing the next billing or charge date.
  • Pause it: click Pause subscription. Nothing is charged until you click Activate subscription.
  • End it: click Cancel subscription.

Customers can also skip, pause or cancel from the customer portal, if you allow those actions.

Prepaid orders

A prepaid purchase is one Shopify order that holds several scheduled deliveries.

  • To refund part of it (for example one delivery the customer no longer wants), refund those items or that amount from the order.
  • Cancelling the whole order in Shopify also cancels the deliveries that have not been sent yet.
  • Either way the subscription itself continues, and it charges for the next prepaid period when the current one ends. Cancel or pause the subscription if the customer should not be charged again.

Common questions

How do I refund one subscription order without cancelling the subscription?
Refund it from Shopify admin > Orders. The subscription keeps going on its normal schedule.

If I refund a renewal, will the customer get a replacement order or be charged again sooner?
No. The next billing date stays where it was.

The customer was charged twice for the same renewal. What do I do?
Refund one of the two orders in Shopify. If the extra order came from Renew immediately, the next billing date has already moved on by one interval; move it back with Edit schedule if needed. See Renew immediately: charging a renewal now.

Can I refund only the shipping?
Yes. In Shopify's refund screen, refund just the shipping amount. To stop charging that shipping on future renewals, change it on the subscription. See Renewals charge shipping or the wrong shipping rate.

A customer cancelled their subscription right after being charged. Can I refund the last order?
Yes, refund that order in Shopify. Cancelling the subscription only stops future charges.
