Where to find failed or past-due subscriptions

When a renewal can't be charged, you'll want to find the affected subscriptions quickly and see why they failed. This guide shows where failed and past-due subscriptions live in the app and how to filter for them.

Table of contents

Filter the Subscriptions list

Go to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Subscriptions and use the filters at the top of the table:

  • Status: filter by Failed, Paused, Active, Cancelled, or Completed.
  • Last payment error: narrow down by the reason the last charge failed: Payment error, Customer error, Inventory error, or Other.
  • Payment method status: find subscriptions whose saved card is Expires soon, Expired, Revoked, or Inactive. These are the ones most likely to fail at the next renewal.
  • Inventory level: find subscriptions with a product that is currently Out of stock or Partially out of stock.

Tip: Filtering by Payment method status > Expires soon lets you reach out before a renewal fails, reducing churn.

What the failure types mean

  • Payment error: the charge was declined or the payment provider returned an error.
  • Customer error: something on the customer's side needs attention, typically an expired or invalid card or insufficient funds.
  • Inventory error: a product in the subscription was out of stock, or could not be delivered from any location, at renewal time (see Out of stock settings).
  • Other: any failure that doesn't fit the categories above.

For every billing error, what it means and how to resolve it, see Understanding billing attempt failures.

Why a subscription shows as Failed or Paused

Whether a subscription ends up Failed or Paused after retries depends on your Dunning settings. The When all payment attempts fail setting there decides what happens once all retries are used up:

  • Fail subscription contract (the default): it appears under Failed.
  • Pause subscription contract: it appears under Paused.
  • Attempt again at next renewal date: it stays active, skips this cycle and tries again next time.

Customers (and you) can also be emailed on each failure. See the renewal failed templates in Notifications.

Fixing a failed subscription

  1. Open the subscription. The Billing error banner at the top names the error and lists the steps to fix it. The Timeline shows every attempt.
  2. If it's a card problem, click Update payment method on the banner. You can switch to another card the customer saved, or send them an email with a secure link to enter a new one. You can't enter card details for them, and changing the card in their store account does not update the subscription.
  3. Once the cause is fixed, click Activate subscription on a failed or paused subscription to start billing again, or Renew immediately on an active one to charge straight away. To do this for many active subscriptions, select them in the list and use the Renew immediately bulk action.

You can also spot affected customers store-wide using the Has failed subscription customer tag. See Tag settings.

All subscriptions stopped billing after a reinstall

When the app is uninstalled, billing on all subscriptions is paused for safety. This also happens after a quick uninstall and reinstall. When you open the app again, Home and Subscriptions show the banner Subscription contracts need to be reactivated.

  1. Click Reactivate subscriptions in the banner.
  2. Each subscription goes back to the status it had before the uninstall, and billing resumes.

Renewals stay paused until you click Reactivate subscriptions. If your subscriptions are active again but the banner keeps showing, contact support and we will clear it. See What happens when you uninstall the app.

Common questions

Where do I see failed subscriptions?
On the Subscriptions list, filter by Status > Failed, or by Last payment error to see why the last charge failed.

How do I find subscribers whose card is about to expire?
Filter by Payment method status > Expires soon and ask those customers to update their card before the next renewal.

Why did a subscription change to Failed?
All the retries set in your Dunning settings failed and When all payment attempts fail is set to Fail subscription contract. The Timeline on the subscription shows each attempt and its error.

Home says my subscription contracts need to be reactivated, but I never uninstalled.
Any uninstall, even one followed straight away by a reinstall, pauses billing. Click Reactivate subscriptions. See All subscriptions stopped billing after a reinstall.

I fixed the card. How do I charge the missed renewal?
Click Renew immediately on an active subscription, or Activate subscription on a failed or paused one. See Charging the renewal again.
