My subscription free shipping discount is not working

Have you set up a free shipping discount for your subscriptions but checkout still charges shipping? Work through these checks in order. The most common causes are a missing Purchase type = Subscription, a minimum purchase requirement the order does not meet, and (if you sell bundles) the discount not being set to combine with Product discounts.

Checkout is free but renewals charge shipping, or existing subscribers still pay shipping? That is a different problem: the discount only reaches new subscriptions, for the number of orders you chose. See Renewals charge shipping or the wrong shipping rate.

  1. In the discount settings, ensure that the Purchase type is set to Subscription

  1. Ensure you have selected the subscription version of the product in the checkout

Your free shipping discount has most likely been configure to apply only for subscription purchases. To confirm the checkout recognises the subscription, check the following signs:

  • The subscription option's name (for example "Delivery every month") appears under the product title.
  • The Recurring subtotal texts should appear beneath the order total.

On a subscription bundle, every item in the bundle should show the subscription option's name. If they do not, the bundle was bought one-time and a subscription-only free shipping discount has nothing to apply to. Open the offer in Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Offers, save it, and try again, or contact support.

  1. Verify that the order meets the minimum purchase amount or quantity for the discount

To guarantee free shipping on all subscription orders, set the Minimum quantity of items to 1 in the Minimum purchase requirements box

Shopify requires automatic free shipping discounts to include a Minimum purchase requirement. If the items in the checkout do not satisfy this minimum, the discount will not be applied. Below you will find an example order that satisfies these requirements:

Example order

  • The discount Minimum purchase amount is set to £9.99
  • The product in the checkout costs 16.99

As you can see in the screenshots below, the free shipping discount is successfully applied for this product.

The subscription order must cost at least £9.99 for the discount to be applied

This product costs £16.99 which is over the £9.99 minimum of the discount

  1. When using multiple discounts at the same time, ensure they are set to combine

Selling bundles? This is the most common cause. A bundle option's price (a fixed bundle price, a quantity break, a build your own bundle) is applied as a Shopify product discount called Supr Bundle Block Pricing or Supr Bundle Pricing (older installs may still show them as "Super Subscriptions Bundle Block Pricing" and "Super Subscriptions Bundle Pricing"), even though you never created it. Your free shipping discount must have Product discounts ticked under Combinations, or Shopify applies only the bigger of the two and the customer pays for shipping.

In the example below, the following 2 discounts are applied to the checkout:

  • An amounts off product discount code named TEA
  • A free shipping discount for subscriptions named FREE SUBSCRIPTION SHIPPING

There are 2 discounts applied to this order: the TEA discount code (1) and the free shipping discount (2)

In order for this to work, both discounts must be set to combine with each other in their settings:

  • Tea: In the Combinations box, Shipping discounts is checked.

The TEA discount code (1) is set to combine with shipping discounts

  • FREE SUBSCRIPTION SHIPPING: In the Combinations box, Product discounts is checked.

The free shipping discount (2) is set to combine with Product and Order discounts

The app's own bundle pricing discount is already set to combine with shipping discounts, so for bundles only your free shipping discount needs changing.

  1. Keep only one free shipping discount for subscriptions

Two automatic free shipping discounts do not add up, and if they are set up differently the result is hard to predict. Delete or deactivate the extra one in Shopify admin > Discounts.

Common questions

The free shipping discount doesn't apply at checkout. What should I check first?
That Purchase type is Subscription, that the order meets the minimum purchase requirement (set Minimum quantity of items to 1 to cover every order), and that the checkout really shows a subscription item.

It works for single products but not for bundles.
Tick Product discounts under Combinations on your free shipping discount. Your bundle price is a product discount, and without combining Shopify applies only one of the two.

The first order ships free but renewals charge shipping.
Check Recurring payments for subscriptions on the discount: Limit discount to the first payment only covers the first order. See Renewals charge shipping or the wrong shipping rate.

I created the discount today. Why don't my existing subscribers get free shipping?
Discounts are saved on a subscription at checkout, so existing subscriptions don't pick up new ones. Update them with the Update shipping price bulk action on the Subscriptions list.
