Changing prices for existing subscribers

Existing subscribers keep the price they signed up at. Changing a product's price in Shopify, or the discount on an offer's subscription option, only affects new subscribers, unless you do one of three things: turn on Automatic price updates so subscriptions follow future price changes, run the Sync prices bulk action to bring subscriptions up to today's prices, or edit a single subscription's price yourself.

Table of contents

Option 1: Follow future price changes automatically

  1. Go to Settings > Billing and renewals.
  2. Under Automatic price updates, choose Prices are updated automatically as they change.
  3. Click Save.

From then on, whenever you change a product's price in Shopify, the active and paused subscriptions that contain it are repriced, and customers pay the new price from their next renewal. Each repriced customer gets the Subscription price updated email, which you can edit or turn off in Settings > Notifications.

Turning the setting on does not reprice anything by itself. It reacts to price changes you make afterwards, and they are processed in batches rather than instantly. To update subscriptions to today's prices straight away, use Option 2.

Option 2: Update existing subscriptions now with Sync prices

Sync prices reprices subscriptions to each product's current Shopify price, whatever the setting above says.

  1. Go to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Subscriptions.
  2. Filter if you like (for example by Product), then select the subscriptions, or all of them.
  3. Choose Sync prices from the bulk actions.
  4. Tick Email customers about the price change if customers should get the Subscription price updated email. Leave it off for a silent update.
  5. Click Sync prices.

Good to know:

  • Active, paused and failed subscriptions are repriced. Products already at the right price are skipped.
  • It cannot be undone, so try it on a few subscriptions first.
  • Large selections can take a few minutes.
  • The new price is charged from each subscription's next renewal. Nothing already charged changes.

Option 3: Change the price on one subscription

  1. Open the subscription in Subscriptions and click Edit.
  2. Click the product's price. In Edit base price, enter the product's price before the subscription discount and click Update. The subscription's discount is applied on top.
  3. To change the discount instead, click Edit discount in the Payment card.
  4. Click Update contract.

The customer gets the Subscription contract updated email unless you have turned it off. See Editing a Subscription Contract.

How subscription discounts are recalculated

When a subscription is repriced (automatically or with Sync prices), its subscription discount is kept and applied to the new price:

  • Percentage: the same percentage off the new price. 10% off a product that goes from $20 to $25 now charges $22.50.
  • Amount off: the same amount off the new price.
  • Fixed price: keeps charging the fixed price. A fixed price is set on purpose to ignore the product's price, so these subscriptions do not change.

To move fixed price subscribers to a new price, open each subscription, click Edit discount and change the fixed price, or switch it to Percentage or Amount off so future price changes follow through.

Changing the discount on an offer's subscription option only affects new subscriptions. Existing ones keep the discount they were created with. See How subscription discounts work.

Other currencies (Shopify Markets)

A subscription in another currency is repriced to the product's price for the customer's country, in that currency. If no price in that currency is found, that subscription is left unchanged rather than charged in the wrong currency. If you only change a market's prices (not the product's own price), run Sync prices afterwards to be sure existing subscribers pick them up. See Selling subscriptions with B2B, Markets, and multiple currencies.

Common questions

If I change a product's price, do existing subscribers pay the new price?
Only if Automatic price updates is set to Prices are updated automatically as they change, or you run Sync prices. Otherwise they keep the price they signed up at.

I raised my prices. How do I make existing subscriptions pay the new price?
Select them on the Subscriptions list and use the Sync prices bulk action. Turn on automatic price updates if future changes should follow on their own.

I turned on automatic price updates but renewals still charge the old price.
The setting only reacts to price changes made after it was turned on. Run Sync prices once to catch up.

Some subscriptions didn't change after syncing. Why?
They most likely use a Fixed price discount, which always charges the fixed amount. Edit their discount.

Do customers have to accept the new price?
No. They are charged the new price at their next renewal. They are emailed if the price updated email is on (automatic updates), if you ticked Email customers about the price change (Sync prices), or when you edit their subscription.

Can I lower the price for one loyal customer only?
Yes. Edit that subscription and change its price or discount (Option 3).
