What shoppers see in the cart and at checkout
Once a shopper adds a subscription or a bundle to the cart, the cart and the checkout are drawn by your theme and by Shopify, not by the widget. This guide explains what they show, why some of it looks different from the product page, and what you can change.

The subscription line in the cart
A product bought on subscription shows an extra line under its name in the cart, at checkout and on the order in your Shopify admin. Shopify writes it as the offer's Subscription name (or the offer's name, if you left that empty) and the subscription option's name, separated by a comma, for example:
Subscribe & Save, Delivery every month
That format belongs to Shopify, so no app can change the comma, the order or the layout. You can change the words:
- Go to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Offers and open the offer.
- Change Subscription name, above the subscription options, for the first part.
- Open the subscription option and change Option name for the second part.
- Click Save.
New carts show the new wording. Orders already placed keep the name they were placed with. In your other languages the line follows the translations in Settings > Translations under Offers.
Why the subscription name can look duplicated
Because Shopify prints both names side by side, a line such as "Subscription, Subscription every month" or "Subscribe & Save, Subscribe & Save monthly" happens when the two names repeat each other.
Give each part its own job:
- Subscription name: what the offer is, for example "Subscribe & Save" or "Coffee Club".
- Option name on each subscription option: only the frequency, for example "Delivery every month" or "Every 2 weeks".
The Subscription name is also the heading above the subscription options on the product page, unless you set a Section title in Design > Labels. So changing it can change your widget's heading too.
Prepaid subscriptions
A prepaid subscription option charges for several deliveries at once, so the cart and the checkout show the whole prepaid amount, not the price of one delivery. For example, a "monthly delivery, prepaid 3" option at $20 a delivery shows $60 in the cart.
The widget shows the per delivery price with a line under it such as "billed as $60.00 / 3 months" (worded in Design > Labels > Prepaid line), so shoppers know the cart total in advance. See Prepaid Subscriptions.
The Recurring subtotal at checkout
Shopify's checkout adds a Recurring subtotal line to every subscription order, such as "$5.38 every month". It tells the customer what future orders cost. Shopify labels it itself: "Does not include shipping, tax, duties, or any applicable discounts".
- The subscription option's own discount is included, because it is part of the subscription price.
- A bundle discount is not included, because Shopify applies it as a discount. So on a bundle bought on subscription, the recurring subtotal shows the price before the bundle discount. For example, two cans on a monthly subscription can show a recurring subtotal of $5.38 while the order itself charges $4.84.
Renewals keep the bundle price. The subscription created at checkout carries the bundle discount, so every renewal charges the discounted amount the customer paid on the first order, not the recurring subtotal figure. You can check it on the subscription in Subscriptions.
When a subscription order has more than one subscription line, for example a Buy X Get Y reward or a free gift on a subscription, Shopify shows "This order has a recurring charge for multiple items" instead of one recurring subtotal. That is Shopify's wording, and the customer is still charged exactly what the option says.
Bundle discounts in the cart
A bundle option's saving appears in the cart and at checkout as a discount on the line, named after the option's Title (in the shopper's language when you have translated it). An option with no title uses the offer's name.
In your Shopify admin, the discounts behind the bundle options are named Supr Bundle Pricing and Supr Bundle Block Pricing (older stores may still see the old "Super Subscriptions" names until the app updates them). Leave them active: they are what applies the bundle price.
If the cart charges a different amount from the option, another discount may be taking over the line. Shopify applies the bigger of two product discounts, never both. See When another discount app overrides your prices.
Crossed out prices
The widget shows the full price crossed out beside a subscription or bundle price. The cart and the checkout do not: Shopify does not display compare-at prices there, whatever app you use. The saving is still applied, as a lower line price for a subscription and as a discount for a bundle.
A bundle price one cent out
A bundle option can show a price one cent away from what the cart charges on a line, for example $22.65 on the option and $22.66 in the cart. The option rounds the final price, while Shopify rounds the discount amount and then subtracts it, so the two can land a cent apart. The cart's figure is what the customer pays. A difference of more than a few cents is not rounding: message us with the product link.
Delivery dates and other lines
- Delivery dates: if you use the Date picker add-on, the chosen date is added to the cart line under the labels you set, by default First delivery date (estimated) and Next delivery (estimated) for a subscription, or Delivery date (estimated) for a one-time or bundle purchase. Change them in Design > Add-on settings > Date picker. See Product Page Add-ons.
- Subscription limits: if a customer reaches a limit you set on a subscription option, checkout shows the Checkout validation message from Design > Add-on settings > Subscription limit reached text.
- Several subscriptions in one cart: each product keeps its own subscription line. See Can customers subscribe to multiple products at once.
The subscription policy text
Shopify requires a short notice on subscription purchases, under the buy buttons on the product page ("This item is a recurring or deferred purchase...") and near the payment button at checkout. The product page wording can be changed in your theme; see How to change the subscription policy text on the product page.
Switching to a subscription at checkout (Shopify Plus)
Stores on Shopify Plus can let shoppers change their mind at checkout. The Checkout Subscription Picker adds a Purchase options dropdown under each product in the checkout, with the one-time purchase and every subscription option that product has. Choosing another option updates that line straight away, price included.
To add it:
- In Shopify admin, go to Settings > Checkout and click Customize.
- In the checkout editor, open the Apps panel and add Checkout Subscription Picker from Supr Bundles & Subscriptions.
- Click Save.
Good to know:
- Shopify Plus only. Shopify only allows apps to add blocks to the checkout pages on Plus stores. On other plans the picker is not available, and customers choose on the product page.
- The dropdown only appears for products with more than one choice. A subscription only product with a single subscription option shows nothing.
- There is no picker on the cart page on any plan. The cart page belongs to your theme.
Common questions
Can I change the comma between the subscription name and the option name in the cart?
No. Shopify writes the line that way. You can change both names on the offer.
Why does the cart say "Subscription, Subscription every 30 days"?
The offer's Subscription name and the subscription option's Option name repeat each other. Make the first the offer ("Subscribe & Save") and the second the frequency ("Delivery every 30 days").
The Recurring subtotal at checkout shows the full price, not my bundle price. Will customers be charged that?
No. The recurring subtotal leaves out discounts, including the bundle discount. Renewals charge the discounted bundle price.
Why does a prepaid subscription show a bigger amount in the cart?
Prepaid charges for all the deliveries in the batch at once. The widget's prepaid line tells shoppers the amount before they add to cart.
Why is the crossed out price missing in the cart?
Shopify does not show compare-at prices in the cart or at checkout. The discount is still applied.
The bundle option says $22.65 but the cart says $22.66. Is that a bug?
No. The option and Shopify round in different places, so a line can differ by a cent. The cart's figure is what is charged.
Why does a 12 pack show as "× 12" in the cart?
A quantity break option adds the pack as that many units of the product, so a 12 pack of one variant is one cart line at quantity 12, and the cart shows that real quantity. That is what takes all 12 units out of the product's stock. The option's saving shows on the line as a discount named after the option's Title, so a title such as "12 pack" tells the customer which pack they chose. If the cart must read "× 1", make each pack its own variant of the product (for example "12 pack" and "24 pack") with its own price, and sell those variants. The tradeoff is stock: Shopify counts each variant's stock separately, so a pack variant no longer draws from the single units, and you keep its stock up to date yourself.
Can customers switch between one-time and subscription at checkout?
Yes on Shopify Plus, with the Checkout Subscription Picker, see Switching to a subscription at checkout. On other Shopify plans, customers choose on the product page.
