Can customers subscribe to multiple products at once

Yes, a customer can subscribe to several products, in one checkout or over time. How those products are grouped into subscriptions depends on their delivery frequency. This guide explains the grouping rules, multiple subscriptions for one customer (including to different addresses), and the right tool when you want products sold together.

How multiple products are grouped

When a customer checks out with more than one subscription product, Shopify groups them by their subscription schedule:

  • Products bought on the same frequency (for example, all "every 1 month") are combined into one subscription: one contract that renews together, as one order.
  • Products on different frequencies (one monthly, one every two weeks) become separate subscriptions, each with its own renewal schedule and its own orders.

This grouping is done by Shopify, so one checkout can create several subscriptions, and one subscription always shares one schedule.

Customers can check out with several subscription items at once. Expect same-frequency items to land in one subscription and differently timed items to split into their own.

Several subscriptions for one customer

A customer can have as many subscriptions as they like. Each one has its own products, schedule, payment method and shipping address.

  • Different addresses: a subscription ships to the address it was checked out with. To send subscriptions to two addresses (for example home and office, or a gift), the customer places a separate checkout for each address. You can also change the address on an existing subscription from Subscriptions (see Managing a customer's subscription on their behalf), and customers can change it in the portal if Update shipping address is on in Settings > Customer portal.
  • Limiting subscriptions per customer is not possible. Shopify lets subscriptions be combined in one cart, and there is no setting that stops a customer from having more than one. The Limit active subscriptions setting on a subscription option caps the total number of subscriptions across all customers, see Limit active subscriptions.

Adding products to an existing subscription

Customers do not have to check out again to add a product. With Add products turned on in Settings > Customer portal, they can add products to their subscription from the customer portal, and the products then renew on that subscription's schedule. You can also add products for them from Subscriptions.

Selling a fixed set together

If you want to sell a defined set of products as a single item (a coffee + filter pack, a starter box, a variety pack), add a Fixed bundle option to an offer. You choose the components, their quantities, and which variants are allowed, and the customer buys the bundle as one choice, either one-time or on subscription. See Fixed bundle.

Letting customers choose their own items

A "build your own bundle" (BYOB), "build-a-box" or "mix & match" experience, where the shopper hand-picks which products go in each delivery, is built in. Add a Build your own bundle (BYOB) option to an offer, define one or more pools of products, and set how many the customer picks from each. For the full setup, see Build your own bundle (BYOB), and for volume deals and Buy X Get Y, see Bundle types: quantity breaks, Buy X Get Y, fixed bundles, and build-a-box.

Common questions

A customer ordered two subscription products. Why do they have two subscriptions?
The products were on different frequencies, so Shopify created a separate subscription for each. Items on the same frequency are combined into one.

Can one order create several subscriptions?
Yes, when the order has subscription items on different frequencies. Each subscription is listed separately under Subscriptions.

Can a customer have subscriptions going to different addresses?
Yes. They check out once per address, or you change the address on one of the subscriptions afterwards.

Can I stop customers adding more than one subscription to the cart, or having more than one subscription?
No, there is no per-customer limit. You can suggest it on the Feature requests page.

Can I merge two of a customer's subscriptions into one?
Add the products of one to the other from Subscriptions, then cancel the one you no longer need.

How can our developer find the subscription created by an order?
In Shopify's Admin GraphQL API, each subscription line item on an order links to its subscription contract (the line item's contract field), and each contract links back to the order that created it (originOrder). One order can link to several contracts. The app also has its own API, see Using the API.
