Exporting Subscription Contracts
Exporting creates a CSV file of your subscriptions (Shopify calls each one a subscription contract). You can export all of them, only the ones you ticked, or only the ones matching your current filters. Each product on a subscription gets its own row, so you can easily analyze products and quantities.
When to Use This Guide
Use this guide to:
- Back up your subscription data offline
- Analyze subscriptions in a spreadsheet
- Get a list of paused, cancelled or failing subscriptions
- Move subscribers to another system
How to export
- Go to Subscriptions. To export only some subscriptions, filter or search the list first, or tick the ones you want.
- Click Export. The Export subscriptions dialog asks what to include:
- Selected subscriptions: only the ones you ticked on the list.
- Subscriptions matching the current filters: everything that matches your filters and search, listed under the option so you can check them.
- All subscriptions: every subscription in your store, ignoring any selection or filters.
- Click Export.
Large exports can take a few minutes to prepare, because Shopify returns subscriptions slowly on big stores. Stay on the Subscriptions page while the Export button shows its spinner. When the file is ready it downloads automatically; if it doesn't, click Download on the Your export is ready banner.
What Data Gets Exported?
Each row in the CSV includes:
- Subscription information: subscription (contract) ID, status, created date, next billing date, currency, and the note
- Billing and delivery policy: interval, interval count, minimum and maximum cycles, and any fixed renewal date
- Customer information: customer ID and email
- Payment method: the ID of the saved payment method used for renewals (never the card details)
- Delivery method: shipping, pickup or local delivery address, the shipping rate, and the delivery price
- Products: product title, variant title and SKU, the subscription option name (the column is called sellingPlanName, Shopify's name for a subscription option), quantity, base price, recurring discounts and line discounts
- History: the number of renewals, the date it was paused, the date it was cancelled, and the cancellation reason if the customer gave one
Because a subscription can contain several products, you may see several rows with the same subscription ID.
Moving subscribers to another app
If you are moving to another subscription app, export All subscriptions and give the file to the new app's team. The subscriptions and the customers' saved payment methods live in Shopify on each customer's record, and the CSV has each subscription's payment method ID and next billing date. Whether the new app can reuse the saved payment methods depends on that app and your payment provider, so ask them. Once the subscriptions are live in the new app, cancel them here (see Cancel all subscriptions, and untick the customer email) so nobody is charged twice.
Common questions
How do I export only paused (or cancelled) subscriptions?
Filter the list by Status, click Export, and choose Subscriptions matching the current filters.
Why is the export taking so long?
Shopify returns subscriptions slowly on large stores, so a big export can take a few minutes. Stay on the Subscriptions page and wait for the Your export is ready banner. If you see Export failed, or nothing arrives after 15 minutes, contact support.
Does the export include card numbers?
No. It only has the ID of the saved payment method. Card details stay with Shopify and your payment provider.
Where do I see why customers cancelled?
In the cancellationReason column of the export, on the Analytics page, and in each subscription's Timeline. See Subscription Analytics.
