Subscription boxes

A subscription box ships a different selection of products every week or every month. You choose each box's products in advance, as far ahead as you like, and every subscriber's order carries the box of the week or month it is billed in. Keep the contents a surprise until the box arrives, or let customers see them in their portal from a date you pick.

A subscription box is a type of subscription option, set in Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Offers.

How a subscription box works

The product customers subscribe to is the box itself, for example "Snack box", at the price you sell it for. Each box's products are added to every subscription on that option at no charge, ahead of its next order. So when the order is billed:

  • the order lists the box and its products, ready to pack,
  • the products come out of your inventory like any other sale,
  • the customer pays only the box's price.

Which box an order gets is decided by the date it is billed, in your store's time zone. With a new box every month, a subscription billed on 3 November gets November's box. With a new box every week, it gets the box of that week (weeks run Monday to Sunday). When a customer skips an order or moves it to another date, their box follows the new date.

Step 1: Make the option a subscription box

  1. Go to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Offers and click Create offer, choose Subscription, then Subscription box. For an existing offer, open it, click Add subscription option and choose Subscription box.
  2. In the option's Subscription box settings, choose New box every: Week or Month. It starts on Week for weekly options and Month for the rest.
  3. Under Customers see the box, choose Before it ships, from its reveal date or Only when it arrives (mystery box).
  4. Click Save.

Step 2: Set up the boxes

  1. In the same settings, click Set up boxes.
  2. The page lists this week or month and the next five. Click Add a later week or Add a later month to plan further ahead.
  3. For each box, click Add products and pick the products and variants that go in it. Set a quantity for each.
  4. To start a box from the one before, click Copy the previous box and change what you need.
  5. Click Save.

Subscriptions due in a box you changed are updated within a few minutes. Each box shows how many orders are already due in it.

Boxes in different sizes

When the box product has variants, for example Small and Large, each product in a box can go to Every size or to one size only. A Large subscriber then gets the products set for every size plus those set for Large.

Mystery or revealed

  • Revealed: a box appears in the customer portal from its Show to customers from date. Leave the date empty to show it as soon as you save it.
  • Mystery: the contents never appear in the portal or in our emails before the box ships. Customers see that a mystery box is on its way.

Shopify's own order confirmation lists the products of an order once it is placed. For a true surprise, check what your Shopify order confirmation email shows for subscription renewals.

What customers see

In the customer portal, a subscription box shows a Your next box card with the products, once revealed, or a short note while it is still a surprise. The box's products are not listed with the subscription's own products, and customers cannot swap, remove or change them. You can reword these texts under Settings > Customer portal > Labels, in the Subscription box group, and translate them under Settings > Translations.

When a box's Show to customers from date arrives, each active subscriber whose next order ships that box gets a Subscription box revealed email listing its products, once per box. A mystery box, or a box shown as soon as you save it (no date), sends no email, and neither does a date more than three days in the past. Turn the email off, or reword it, under Settings > Notifications > Customer notifications > Subscription box revealed, and translate it under Settings > Translations.

The first order, placed at checkout, contains only the box product. The app adds that box's contents to the order as a note named Box, [week or month], so you know what to pack.

When a week or month has no box

An order billed in a week or month with no box set ships the box product alone. To stop that from happening, the option's Subscription box settings warn you when the current or next box is not set yet, and the Set up boxes page marks a box with orders due and no products.

Common questions

Can a customer skip a box they do not want?
Yes. Skipping the next order in the portal skips that box; the next order then gets the box of the week or month it is billed in.

What happens when I change a box that is already set?
Subscriptions due in it are updated with the new products within a few minutes. Orders already billed are not changed.

What happens when I change the option to another type?
The box products are taken off every subscription on the option before their next order. Your boxes are kept, so changing it back picks them up again.

What happens when I switch from monthly to weekly boxes?
Your monthly boxes are kept but not used, and the page shows weekly boxes to set instead.

Do box products count toward loyalty rewards or discounts?
No. They are added at no charge, and journeys and price updates leave them alone.
