Journeys
Journeys change a subscription as it goes, without you editing each one. Move subscribers from a starter size to the full product after their first order, send a different product each month, give a bigger discount to subscribers who stay, or switch to a less frequent delivery once a customer has stocked up.
Journeys are the advanced automation behind a subscription option's type and loyalty settings in Offers. To build your own, with conditions and events, go to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Grow > Journeys. Start from a template (Loyalty rewards, Spend rewards, Product swap, Welcome back discount, Thank-you gift, Rotate products or Keep a corrected address: click Use template under one) or click Create journey. The list shows each journey's type: the template or Offers setting it came from, or Custom. The journey opens in the editor, full screen.
The journey page and the editor
Each journey has its own page: the journey drawn top to bottom, its status (Active or Inactive), and Recent runs, the subscriptions it changed. Click Edit to open the editor, full screen. Close it with the X in the top right corner.
The editor saves as you work: the bottom right corner shows Saved and when the journey last changed. Nothing you change there reaches subscriptions until you click Turn on journey (or Turn on changes for a journey that is already on). Until then, subscriptions follow the journey as it was last turned on. Under More actions you can rename the journey, discard changes you have not turned on, turn the journey off, or delete it.
How a journey works
A journey reads top to bottom, like a flow chart:
- Trigger: when the journey starts. Order paid (a set order, for example order 2; a set order and every order after it; or every few orders, for example every 3 orders starting at order 1), Subscription started, Subscription renewed (every renewal order paid, from order 2), Renewal payment failed (on each failed attempt), Subscription paused, Subscription cancelled, Subscription restarted (a paused or cancelled subscription made active again), Product added (any product, or only the ones you pick), Next order date changed or Shipping address changed (each by the customer in their portal, by you in the admin, or through the API). A journey on Subscription cancelled runs on the cancelled subscription, so choose actions that still make sense there, such as a webhook event or a gift card. Order 1 is the first order. Under Runs on, choose Every subscription or Subscriptions on chosen subscription options; a journey on chosen options acts on the whole subscription once it holds one of them, and is listed under each of those options in Offers. To narrow it down further, add a condition right after the trigger and put the steps on its True path. To use a different trigger, hover over it and click the change button beside it.
- Conditions: a condition splits the journey in two. Subscriptions that meet it follow the True path, the rest the False path, and each path can have its own steps. Conditions can check a customer tag, the products on the subscription, the subscription option, the shipping country, whether it is prepaid, the value of one delivery, the month the next order falls in (in your store's timezone), the subscription itself (by the number on its page, for steps that should only apply to particular subscriptions), the order number, whether it has a bundle (any, one offer's, or one of its bundle options) and how many bundles or bundle items it holds. Inside one box, any condition is enough (OR); with several boxes, every box must match (AND).
- Actions: what happens to the subscription, one after another along a path.
To add a step, hover over the step it should follow and click the + under it (under True or False for a condition), then choose Action or Condition. For an action, pick it from the list on the left. Click any step to change it in the panel on the left; press Escape or click the X to close the panel. To remove a step, hover over it and click the delete button beside it, or select it and press Delete. A step marked Review still needs something, such as the products to swap; a journey cannot be turned on until every step is filled in. You can drag steps, zoom, undo and redo, and click the arrange button in the bottom left corner to lay the journey out neatly.
A journey runs a few minutes after the order is paid (or after the product is added or the date changed), and changes the subscription's next orders. It acts only on orders and changes made after you first turn it on, never on what happened before. Changes the app makes itself, including a pause or cancellation by another journey, never start a journey. For a journey that can match more than once, choose in the trigger whether it runs every time or only the first time on each subscription.
If you chat with us from the app, you can also describe the journey you want and the assistant prepares it for you, switched off, and opens it in the editor for you to check and turn on.
Test your journey
Before you turn a journey on, test it on your own subscriptions. Click Select test event above the trigger:
- Recent events are real ones from your store that match the trigger, such as the last orders paid.
- Generate events picks subscriptions from your store that take each path through the journey, so every True and False path gets one.
- Add event tests a subscription you name by its number (and, for an order trigger, the order number).
Click an event to run the test. The steps the subscription would go through are highlighted and joined by a solid line, and each condition marks the path it took, True or False. Click a step and open Test results to see the details: each condition with the subscription's own value beside it, or what an action would change, for example which product would be swapped and at what price. A test never changes a subscription. It runs again by itself after each change you make, and events you add or generate are kept with the journey.
Actions
- Swap a product: replace one or more products with a product you pick. Wherever a step or condition asks for products, you pick variants, so a step can act on one size or flavour only. Choose the price from then on: keep what the customer pays now, the new product's price, or a price you set.
- Add a product or Remove a product. A subscription is never left empty: if the products to remove are its only ones, nothing is removed.
- Add a discount for some orders: a percentage or an amount off, for a set number of orders. The name you give it is what the customer sees.
- Change the discount: the subscription's own discount from the next order on, as a percentage off, an amount off each product, or a price for each product. Bundles keep their price.
- Change the subscription option: move the subscription to another option, with its frequency and price.
- Rotate to the next product: click Add products and pick products and their variants, then drag the steps into order. Under Which variant ships, either follow the customer's choice (they keep the options you tick, such as their size, and each step is a product or a colour) or ship the same variant to everyone (each step is one exact variant). Each order moves the subscription to the next step. After the last step it starts again (from the first, or from a step you choose), stays on the last, or expires the subscription.
- Move the next order date by a number of days, earlier or later.
- Move the next order to a month: the next time the month you pick comes round, on the same day of the month (or the last day of a shorter month). The orders after it follow on from that date, and nothing changes when the next order is already in that month. For a seasonal break, use Order paid on every order from order 1, a Month of the next order condition with December and January ticked, and this action set to February on its True path.
- Pause the subscription right after the order.
- Give a reward: a free product with the next order, or a gift card emailed to the customer.
- Start loyalty flow: order number and Start loyalty flow: amount spent: a ladder of loyalty rewards, at set order numbers or as the customer's spend passes set amounts. The subscription leaves any loyalty flow it was on, and each journey starts its flow once per subscription. See Loyalty programs.
- Swap a product in a bundle: replace a product inside a bundle with another. It stays in its bundle at the price the customer pays for it now.
- Add a bundle: add one of your offers' bundle options (a fixed bundle, a build a box or a quantity break without gifts or add-ons) with the products you pick, priced as the offer prices it.
- Remove a bundle: take a bundle off the subscription with all its products and its discount. A subscription is never left empty.
- End the bundle discount after some orders: keep a bundle's discount for a number of orders, counted from the order that runs the step, then charge the full subscription price. Skipped orders do not count.
- Update subscription: set the subscription's shipping address, shipping method, note or an attribute, see Update subscription below.
- Send a webhook event: a
journey.step_appliedevent to your event notification endpoints under Settings > Integrations > API, for example to start a Zap.
The changes a journey makes to a subscription's products, discounts, dates and status appear in its history, like any other edit.
Update subscription
Update subscription sets fields on the subscription from a source you choose. Add a row for each field:
- Shipping address: from the first order's or the latest order's shipping address, or the customer's default address.
- Shipping method: from the first order's or the latest order's shipping method.
- Note or an Attribute (by its name): from an attribute or the note of the first or latest order, from text you write, or Remove it.
A field that already matches is left as it is, and a source with no value changes nothing. An address is only set on subscriptions delivered by shipping, and only with a postal code. Prices, products and discounts cannot be set this way.
Under When, choose Now, or When the source changes and how many hours to keep checking (up to 168). Use the second for apps that correct an order after checkout, such as pickup point apps: Shopify saves the subscription with the address from checkout, so a correction made to the order afterwards would otherwise never reach the renewals. The journey checks every few minutes at first, then hourly, and makes the change once. If the customer or you change that field in the meantime, it is left as they set it.
The Keep a corrected address template does exactly this: on Subscription started, it copies the first order's shipping address onto the subscription once the order changes, for up to 24 hours. To clear a pickup point's details when a customer later moves to another address, add a journey on Shipping address changed with Update subscription set to Remove it for that attribute.
Journeys made for you
Some settings create a journey of their own, which you will see in Grow > Journeys under a grey line naming what made it:
- A subscription option's type in Offers (Free trial, Starter, then refills, Rotating products), its Loyalty rewards and Change frequency after, and Change the discount after some orders under its discount, and Bundle discount on subscriptions for the first orders on an offer's bundle options. Each runs as a journey for that option (or for the offer's bundles), from when the offer is published. Its first step holds the setting and can only be changed there or in that step; you can add conditions and more actions around it. It runs while the offer is published. Turning the setting off in Offers, or changing the option's type, removes the journey, and deleting the journey turns the setting off on the option.
- Loyalty programs, made from the Loyalty rewards and Spend rewards templates (and those from the former Grow > Loyalty and rewards page). Each is a journey with a Subscription started trigger and one Start loyalty flow step, see Loyalty programs.
Show a journey's rewards to customers
In the trigger, turn on Show its rewards to customers and the journey's discounts, free products and gift cards appear on the product page and in the customer portal next to the subscription option's loyalty rewards, each at the order it is on. It works for a journey that runs on chosen subscription options, after a set order (Order paid or Subscription renewed), with no condition, since a condition means not every customer gets it. Customers see the same reward wording as loyalty rewards, which you can reword under Design and translate under Settings > Translations. These journeys are also listed under Grow > Loyalty and rewards.
A Start loyalty flow step right after Subscription started, on chosen subscription options with no condition, is shown the same way, instead of the option's own loyalty program.
Good to know
- If the journey changes the same thing after the same order as another running journey that can reach the same subscriptions, the editor shows a warning over the canvas naming both. Journeys run in the order they were created, oldest first, and both changes are made.
- Swapping, removing or rotating products never breaks a bundle apart: a swapped product in a bundle keeps its bundle price, and Remove a product and Rotate to the next product leave bundle products alone. Use the bundle actions for those.
- Prices you set are in your store's currency and are converted for customers who pay in another currency, at the rate their subscription uses.
- If a product, variant or option a journey uses is deleted, that journey's change is skipped for the subscription.
- Inactive journeys never run. Deleting a journey stops it; changes it already made stay.
