A Beginner's Guide to Bundles

Bundles let you sell more of one product, or several products together, at a better price: volume discounts ("buy 3, save 15%"), Buy X Get Y deals, curated sets, and boxes customers fill themselves. In Supr Bundles & Subscriptions a bundle is a set of bundle options inside an offer. The options show on your existing product pages, so there is no new bundle product to create, and customers can buy any bundle one-time or on subscription.

Yes, you can bundle different products together. Use a Fixed bundle option (you choose the products) or a Build your own bundle option (customers choose from products you pick). Both can be bought one-time or on subscription, and you do not need the Shopify Bundles app or any other bundle app. See Bundling different products together.

This guide covers the essentials. For every setting on every option, see Bundle types: quantity breaks, Buy X Get Y, fixed bundles, and build-a-box.

How bundles work

Everything is built on one page: Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Offers. Each offer has a type:

  • Bundle: bundle options only. Customers buy them one-time.
  • Subscription: subscription options only, no bundles.
  • Bundle + Subscription: bundle options and subscription options together, so a customer picks a pack or a set and chooses one-time or a delivery frequency.

A bundle option is one choice the customer sees on the product page, such as "Buy 2, save 10%", "Complete the set", or "Build your box". The options appear on the product pages the offer applies to, above the add to cart button. A single option (one unit at the normal price) sits alongside them for customers who do not want a bundle.

The four bundle types

Every option has its own type, so one offer can mix them:

Option type

What it does

Quantity break

Buy more of one product and save

Buy X, get Y

Buy X items, get Y free or discounted

Fixed bundle

Sell a fixed set of different products together

Build your own bundle (BYOB)

Customers fill a box from products you choose (mix & match, build-a-box)

All four work for one-time purchases and for subscriptions. Free gifts and optional add-ons can be attached to any option.

Bundling different products together

Two option types price a set of different products as one deal:

  • Fixed bundle: you decide exactly what is in the set and how many of each, for example a shampoo, a conditioner and a brush. Customers can still pick a variant of each product (a size, a grind, a colour) where you allow it.
  • Build your own bundle (BYOB): you choose the products, customers choose the mix, for example "any 6 flavours" or "pick 2 coffees and 1 filter pack". You can give a bigger discount as the box fills.

Both show on the product pages your offer applies to, both can be bought one-time or on subscription, and the order contains the real products, so stock and fulfilment work as normal.

A Quantity break does not do this: it counts one product at a time, so three different products never add up to a 3 pack. For "any 3 products for 15% off", use a build your own bundle option.

Already sell bundles made with the Shopify Bundles app? You can sell those bundle products on subscription as well: add the bundle product to a subscription offer, and when the offer editor says component products are missing, click Add component products so every product inside the bundle is in the offer too. For new bundles, bundle options are simpler. Bundles made with other bundle apps usually cannot be combined with our subscriptions, see Using Supr Bundles & Subscriptions with other apps and tools.

Creating a bundle

  1. Go to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Offers and click Create offer.
  2. Choose Bundle (bought one-time) or Bundle + Subscription (bought one-time or on subscription).
  3. Under Choose a bundle type, pick a ready-made starting point. The chips at the top filter them: Quantity breaks, Buy X, get Y, Fixed bundle, Build your own, and Gifts & add-ons. Or click Start from scratch at the top of the page. Everything can be changed later.
  4. In Offer details, enter an Offer name (for you, customers do not see it) and choose where the options show under Applies to: All products, Specific collections, or Specific products.
  5. In the Bundle options section, set the Bundle name, which is the heading shown above the options ("Bundle & Save" unless you change it). On an offer with subscriptions, a subscribed bundle keeps its bundle discount on every order by default. To keep it for the first orders only, open a bundle option and turn on Bundle discount for the first orders only under Price and discount in its additional settings, then set the number of orders, the first one included. It applies to every bundle option in the offer: a subscribed bundle pays the bundle price for those orders and the subscription option's own price after them. Skipped orders do not count. The product page says so under the bundle options ("On a subscription, the bundle price applies to your first 3 orders.", reworded under Design > Labels), and the renewal reminder before the first order without it tells the customer. The setting runs as a journey on the offer's bundles, which you can open under Grow > Journeys to add steps around it. Click an option to open it and set its quantity, products and price, and click Add bundle option to add another. For a fixed bundle or a build your own bundle, add the products that go in it.
  6. On a Bundle + Subscription offer, set up the subscription options underneath: the delivery frequency and the subscription discount.
  7. Check the Status in the side card is Published (new offers start that way), then click Save.

Now open a product page the offer applies to. If the options are not there, go to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Design: if it shows an Enable widget button, click it, then click Save in the theme editor that opens. For every other cause, see Bundle options are not showing on the product page.

One-time, subscription, or both

Bundles are not subscription-only. How a bundle can be bought depends on the offer:

  • Bundle offer: every option is bought one-time. A pure volume discount with no subscription at all.
  • Bundle + Subscription offer: the customer picks a bundle option, then one-time or a delivery frequency from the subscription options. The one-time choice can be shown or hidden per offer, with the eye icon on the offer's One-time purchase row.
  • Per option: open a bundle option. Under its main fields, each of its other settings is a small chip that names the setting and, once it is on, shows On or its value. Click Subscription only (that option can only be bought on subscription) or One-time purchase only (for example a gift set or a trial size you do not want repeating): the option's Additional settings open with that setting expanded, and its switch turns it on.
  • A different frequency for each pack: add one subscription option per frequency (for example every month, every 2 months, every 3 months). On each subscription option, click Restrict to specific bundle options, turn it on, and tick only the pack it belongs to. The 1 bottle option then offers monthly delivery, the 2 bottle option every 2 months, and so on. See the worked example in A Beginner's Guide to Subscription Offers.
  • One click instead of two: if each of your options already says how it is bought, you can hide the separate one-time or subscription choice. See One choice instead of two.

To add subscriptions to a bundle offer you already run, open it, change Offer type to Bundle + Subscription, set up the subscription option that appears, and click Save.

How the bundle discount and the subscription discount combine

By default both apply when a customer buys a bundle on subscription. The bundle option sets the pack price first, then the subscription discount comes off that price. Two percentages multiply rather than add.

Example. A product costs $20. Your 3 pack option takes 10% off, so 3 units cost $54. A subscription option with 5% off then takes 5% off $54, so a subscriber pays $51.30, which is 14.5% off in total, not 15%.

To keep the two discounts apart:

  • Bundle discount for one-time orders only: open the bundle option, click Apply discount to subscriptions and turn it off. Subscribers then get the subscription discount alone. (On a Buy X, get Y option, turn on One-time purchase only instead, so the deal is only sold one-time.)
  • Subscription only on some packs: on the subscription option, turn on Restrict to specific bundle options and tick only the bundle options it should be offered on.
  • Pack discounts for subscribers only: set the bundle options' price to Full price, then add one subscription option per pack with the discount you want for that pack, each restricted to its pack with Restrict to specific bundle options. One-time packs then cost full price and each subscribed pack gets its own discount.

A subscription option with a Fixed price discount cannot be paired with a bundle option priced by Amount off or Fixed price on subscriptions, because both would claim to set the price. Use a Percentage off bundle option, or turn off Apply discount to subscriptions on the bundle option. The editor tells you when you save.

Giving a bundle its own product page

Bundle options normally sit on the product pages of the products involved. If you would rather sell the bundle from one page of its own (a "Gift set" or "Starter kit" page with its own title, photos and description, which can also sit in your collections):

  1. Create a normal Shopify product for the bundle, with its own title, images, and description.
  2. In Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Offers, create a Bundle or Bundle + Subscription offer with a Fixed bundle or Build your own bundle option holding the real products.
  3. Under Applies to, choose Specific products and pick the product you created in step 1.

Customers see one clean page, and stock is still drawn from the real products in the option.

Do not use the old "Grouped product" bundle. That retired flow built a special bundle product for you. Bundles made that way keep working and appear in your Offers list with a Product bundle badge, but they are read-only, and every new bundle should be built as options inside an offer as described above.

How bundle inventory works

A bundle is a group of real products, not a separate stock item. When a customer buys a bundle, the stock of each product in it goes down by the quantity the bundle holds. You keep managing stock on your normal products.

Check each product has enough stock before promoting a bundle. A fixed bundle cannot be added to the cart while any product in it is sold out, and the option does not show a sold-out message, so restock it or take it out of the bundle. For how renewals behave when a product runs out, see Out of Stock Settings.

Selling a subscription only in fixed pack sizes

To make customers subscribe in packs (for example only multiples of 3), use a setting on the subscription option rather than a bundle option:

  1. Go to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Offers and open the offer.
  2. Click the subscription option to open it, then click Sell in fixed quantities.
  3. Turn it on and set the Quantity (2 or more).
  4. Click Save.

Customers can then only buy this subscription in multiples of that quantity. See Sell in fixed quantities.

Tips and best practices

  • Make your best-value option the default with Make default, and fill in its Badge field with something like "Most popular".
  • Name options so customers know what they get, for example "Taster set: all 4 flavours, save 10%".
  • Keep one bundle offer per product. When two bundle offers apply to the same product, only one of them shows.
  • Check stock on every product in a fixed bundle before you promote it.
  • Shopify does not show compare-at ("was") prices in the cart or at checkout, for any app. A struck-through price you rely on shows on the product page only.

Common questions

Can I bundle different products together, like 3 or 4 products at a discount?
Yes. Add a Fixed bundle option (you choose the products and quantities) or a Build your own bundle option (customers choose) to a Bundle or Bundle + Subscription offer. It shows on your existing product pages and can be bought one-time or on subscription. See Bundling different products together.

Do I need the Shopify Bundles app, or a separate bundle product?
No. Bundles are options inside an offer. If you want one page just for the bundle, create a normal Shopify product and point the offer at it. See Giving a bundle its own product page.

Can customers subscribe to a bundle?
Yes. Use a Bundle + Subscription offer. Every option type can be bought on subscription, and you can make individual options subscription only or one-time only.

Can I show quantity breaks and subscribe and save on the same product page?
Yes. Create a Bundle + Subscription offer with Quantity break options and subscription options. Customers pick a pack, then one-time or a delivery frequency.

How do I stop the bundle discount stacking with the subscription discount?
Turn off Apply discount to subscriptions on the bundle option. The bundle discount then applies to one-time orders only. See How the bundle discount and the subscription discount combine.

Can a 2 pack ship every 2 months and a 3 pack every 3 months?
Yes. Add one subscription option per frequency, and on each one turn on Restrict to specific bundle options and tick the matching pack.

Does the app create a new product for my bundle?
No. The options show on the product pages your offer applies to, and orders contain the real products.

I created a bundle but nothing shows on my product page.
See Bundle options are not showing on the product page. The most common causes are an offer of type Subscription, an offer set to Draft, or the widget not switched on under Design.
