# Which payment gateways work with subscriptions

Subscriptions charge your customers automatically on a schedule, so they need a payment gateway that can securely store a payment method and bill it again later. Shopify decides which gateways can do this, and the list is the same for every subscription app: **Shopify Payments** (including Shop Pay), **PayPal Express**, **Authorize.net**, **Adyen** and **Stripe**. This guide explains what to do if yours isn't supported and the most common gotchas (especially with PayPal).

### How subscription payments work

Supr Bundles & Subscriptions uses Shopify's native subscription system. When a customer subscribes, their payment method is **securely stored (vaulted) by the payment gateway**, and Shopify charges it automatically on each renewal. This is why only gateways that support recurring, vaulted payments can be used for subscriptions: a gateway that only handles one-off payments can't be charged again later without the customer re-entering their details.

Because this is a Shopify platform requirement, the supported list is set by Shopify and is the same for every subscription app.

### Supported payment gateways

To sell subscriptions, your store must use one of the following:

* [**Shopify Payments**](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/shopify-payments), the simplest option and recommended where it's available. **Shop Pay** is part of Shopify Payments and works for subscriptions.
* [**PayPal Express**](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/paypal), supported with some limitations (see below).
* [**Authorize.net**](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/third-party-providers/set-up-authorize-net)
* [**Adyen**](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments/third-party-providers/adyen-gateway)
* **Stripe**

|| If Shopify Payments is available in your country, it's the easiest path. It requires no extra setup for subscriptions and supports the widest range of cards and wallets.

Shopify keeps the authoritative list here: [supported subscription payment gateways](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/products/purchase-options/subscriptions/shopify-subscriptions/considerations#supported-subscription-product-payment-gateways).

### Only PayPal shows at checkout for subscriptions

When the cart contains a subscription, Shopify's checkout only offers payment methods that can be charged again later. If your card payments run through a provider that is not on the supported list, those card options disappear for subscription checkouts, and only **PayPal Express** (if you have it) is left. One-time orders still show all your usual payment methods.

To offer card payments on subscriptions:

1. In [**Shopify admin > Settings > Payments**](https://admin.shopify.com/settings/payments), check which provider processes your cards.
2. Add or switch to a supported card gateway: Shopify Payments where it is available, or Stripe, Adyen or Authorize.net.
3. Place a [test subscription order](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/creating-a-test-subscription-order-kvj18k/) to confirm cards now appear.

You can keep your existing provider active for one-time orders.

### PayPal, important limitations

PayPal is supported, but it behaves differently from card payments:

* It must be **PayPal Express**, connected in Shopify admin > Settings > Payments. Customers must specifically check out with PayPal for their subscription to be billed through PayPal.
* The PayPal account must be allowed to take **recurring (vaulted) payments**. If PayPal works for one-time orders but subscription checkouts fail or show an error, recurring billing is usually not enabled on your PayPal account or not offered in your region. PayPal support (or Shopify support) can enable it or confirm availability.
* PayPal can be **less reliable for automatic renewals** than card-based gateways, and customers can stop automatic payments from their PayPal account, which fails the next renewal.
* If you rely heavily on PayPal, we recommend also offering a card gateway (such as Shopify Payments) so customers have a dependable recurring option.

If a customer's PayPal renewal fails, your [dunning settings](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/dunning-settings-14fp497/) control how the retry is handled.

### What is not supported

These payment methods **cannot** be used for subscriptions because they can't be automatically charged again:

* Cash on delivery (COD)
* Manual payment methods (bank deposit, money order, etc.)
* Gift cards as the recurring payment method
* "Buy now, pay later" providers such as Shop Pay Installments, Klarna, Afterpay or Affirm
* Third-party checkout and local gateway apps that are not on Shopify's supported list. Merchants often ask about Razorpay, Cashfree, GoKwik, Mercado Pago and iyzico: check Shopify's list above, and if your provider is not on it, it cannot take subscription payments

Customers can still use these for one-time purchases, just not for the recurring part of a subscription. If you need a specific regional provider added, that request goes to Shopify rather than to us, since the platform controls which gateways can vault a payment method for subscriptions.

|| Third-party checkouts (such as GoKwik) replace Shopify's checkout, so subscription items in them can fail with errors like "the amount of the products in the cart have been updated". Subscriptions need Shopify's own checkout.

### Availability by country

Gateway availability depends on your country, not on Supr Bundles & Subscriptions. Shopify Payments isn't offered in every region (a common question from merchants in places like India, Qatar or South Africa). In that case, choose another supported gateway from the list above that operates in your country. Authorize.net, Adyen, Stripe and PayPal Express are commonly used alternatives, and PayPal Express is often the most practical one where Shopify Payments is not available. Check [Shopify's payment provider availability](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/payments) for what's offered where you operate.

### If your gateway isn't supported

If your current provider can't do recurring payments, you have two options:

1. **Add a supported gateway** for subscriptions (you can keep your existing provider active for one-time orders).
2. **Contact support**, tell us your country and provider, and we'll help you find the best supported option.

|| You can confirm your active payment providers in [**Shopify admin > Settings > Payments**](https://admin.shopify.com/settings/payments).

### Common questions

**Why does my subscription checkout only show PayPal and no card option?**
Your card provider is not on Shopify's list of subscription gateways, so Shopify hides it when the cart has a subscription. Add a supported card gateway. See [Only PayPal shows at checkout for subscriptions](#3-only-paypal-shows-at-checkout-for-subscriptions).

**Why are no payment methods shown at all when checking out a subscription?**
None of your active providers can take recurring payments. Add Shopify Payments, PayPal Express, Stripe, Adyen or Authorize.net.

**Does Razorpay (or Cashfree, GoKwik, Mercado Pago, iyzico) work with subscriptions?**
Only if Shopify lists it as a subscription gateway, which it does not at the time of writing. This is the same for every subscription app. Keep it for one-time orders and add a supported gateway for subscriptions.

**Can customers pay for subscriptions with Klarna, Afterpay or Shop Pay Installments?**
No. Buy now, pay later providers cannot take recurring subscription payments on Shopify.

**PayPal works for one-time orders but subscription checkout fails. Why?**
Your PayPal account needs recurring (vaulted) payments enabled. Contact PayPal or Shopify support to turn it on for your account and region.

**If I switch payment provider, what happens to existing subscriptions?**
Saved cards cannot move between providers. Keep the old provider enabled, or ask those customers to update their payment method. See [Payment provider not enabled](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/understanding-billing-attempt-failures-1xx817t/#3-payment-provider-not-enabled).
