# Shipping Settings

| To access this settings page, go to [**Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Settings > Shipping**](https://admin.shopify.com/apps/super-subscriptions/app/settings/shipping)

**Yes, shipping is charged on every renewal, not just the first order.** When a customer subscribes, Shopify saves a shipping rate and price on the subscription, and each renewal charges that saved price. Changing your shipping rates later does not change existing subscriptions on its own. This page controls which rate renewals use, when the saved price is refreshed, and the subscription-only shipping rates you offer through subscription shipping profiles.

### How renewal shipping is priced

* At checkout, the subscription gets a shipping rate and price from your Shopify shipping settings (or from a subscription shipping profile, below). Shopify shipping discounts, such as a free shipping discount for subscriptions, are saved on the subscription too.
* Every renewal charges that saved shipping price, minus any shipping discount still running on the subscription.
* Later changes to your shipping rates, profiles or discounts only reach **new** subscriptions, unless you turn on [Automatic shipping price updates](#3-automatic-shipping-price-updates) or update existing subscriptions yourself.

If renewals charge shipping you did not expect, see [Renewals charge shipping or the wrong shipping rate](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/renewals-charge-shipping-or-the-wrong-shipping-rate-1uqzcbd/).

### Recurring shipping options

|| Select your preferred shipping behaviour for recurring orders.

By default, Shopify sets the shipping option for recurring orders to the lowest-cost option available based on the product's [shipping profile](https://help.shopify.com/en/manual/fulfillment/setup/shipping-profiles). However, this behavior may not be suitable if you rely on third-party apps to manage shipping or have custom shipping rules in place.

* **Automatically select the cheapest shipping option** (the default): recommended by Shopify for cost efficiency.
* **Keep the initial shipping option**: the subscription keeps the shipping method the customer chose at their first checkout. Useful if the default behaviour interferes with shipping apps or custom shipping options.

This setting only affects **renewals** of subscriptions created after you change it. The first checkout still shows your normal shipping choices.

|| **Keep the initial shipping option copies the shipping price the customer actually paid on their first order**, after any discount, onto the subscription. Two things follow. If the first order also contained one-time items, every renewal is charged the shipping for that bigger order. And if the first order's shipping was free thanks to a first-order-only discount, renewals stay free. If either is a problem for you, use **Automatically select the cheapest shipping option**.

### Automatic shipping price updates

|| Choose when to update shipping prices for subscription orders.

Both options are off by default. When on, the app looks up the current shipping rate for the subscription's address and saves it on the subscription if it has changed:

* **After a subscription renewal**: after each renewal, automatic or manual. The renewal that triggers the check is charged the old price; the new one applies from the next renewal.
* **When a customer updates their subscription through the customer portal**: after the customer adds, removes or swaps products, changes their subscription, or changes quantities.

These updates only apply to subscriptions that ship to an address. Pickup and local delivery subscriptions are left as they are.

### Subscription shipping profiles

A subscription shipping profile gives subscription orders their own shipping rates, separate from your one-time rates. It applies at checkout and to renewals. Profiles are attached to **offers**, not to individual products: every subscription bought through an offer in the profile uses the profile's rates.

You set up the whole profile in the app, including where you ship and what you charge. The app manages the profile in Shopify for you, so you do not need to open Shopify's shipping settings, and the profile keeps working on stores that have moved to market-based shipping.

**Create a profile**

1. In the **Subscription shipping profile** card, click **New profile**.
2. Enter a **Profile name** (customers won't see it).
3. Click **Add offers** and pick the offers that should use this profile. Each entry shows the offer's name and then its subscription option, for example "Coffee club, Subscribe & Save", so offers that share a subscription option name are easy to tell apart.
4. Add your shipping zones and rates (below), or add them later.
5. Click **Save** in the bar at the top of the page.

**Fulfillment locations**

A new profile ships from all of your store's shipping locations. They are listed above the shipping zones. To choose which locations ship subscription orders, click **Manage**, tick the locations, click **Done** and save. A location you add in Shopify later is not in the profile until you add it here; the card tells you when one is missing. Each location shows its city and country. Click its name, or click **...** next to it and choose **Manage location**, to open it in Shopify, where you create or rename locations.

**Separate rates for a location**

If one location should charge differently, for example a second warehouse, click **...** next to it and choose **Create separate rates**. It moves into its own section with its own zones and rates; add a zone and a shipping option to it, then save. A location that is not in the profile yet can get its own rates the same way with **Create separate rates** in the note that names it. To merge a location's rates back, click **Remove rates** on its section and add the location to another section with **Manage**. A profile can have up to five sections.

**Shipping zones**

A zone is a group of countries and regions that share the same rates.

1. Click **Add zone**.
2. Enter a **Zone name** (customers won't see it).
3. Search for and tick the countries and regions to ship to. Click the arrow next to a country to pick only some of its states or provinces. Tick **Rest of world** to cover every country that is not in another zone.
4. Click **Done**.

A zone for a single country shows its flag. When a zone lists more than three countries, hover over "more" to see the rest. If a zone holds countries that none of your active markets sells to, a note says how many: subscribers there cannot check out until you add those countries to a market in Shopify.

A country or region can only be in one zone of a profile. Countries already in another zone are marked **In another zone**. To change or remove a zone, click **...** next to it and choose **Edit zone** or **Delete zone**.

**Shipping rates**

Each zone lists its rates with their conditions and price. A rate based on order amount or weight with no limits reads **By order amount** or **By weight**. To add one, click **Add shipping option** under the zone and pick a **Rate type**:

* **Flat**: a fixed price for every order. Enter a **Name** (customers see it at checkout) and a **Price**, or tick **Offer free shipping**. **Add delivery details** adds a line such as a delivery time under the name at checkout.
* **Order amount**: the rate only shows for orders whose total is between the **Minimum** and **Maximum** you enter. Leave **Maximum** empty for no limit. For example, a free rate for orders of $50.00 and up, and a $4.99 rate for orders up to $49.99.
* **Weight**: the same, based on the total weight of the order, in your store's weight unit.
* **Carrier or app calculated**: the price comes from a carrier or shipping app connected to your store, such as a carrier account. Pick the **Carrier or app**, choose whether to **Automatically include new services when they become available**, and add an optional **Handling fee** as a percentage, a flat amount, or both. This option only appears when your store has a carrier or app that can calculate rates.

To change or remove a rate, click **...** next to it and choose **Edit rate** or **Delete rate**.

Changes to zones and rates are not saved until you click **Save**. Click **Discard** to undo them. If Shopify rejects a change, the page lists what needs fixing and nothing is saved.

|| **Changing rates does not change existing subscriptions.** New subscriptions get the new rates. Existing ones keep the shipping price saved on them until you turn on [Automatic shipping price updates](#3-automatic-shipping-price-updates) or update them (see [Changing shipping on existing subscriptions](#3-changing-shipping-on-existing-subscriptions)).

If you turn off one of the app's rates in Shopify's shipping settings, it shows as **Turned off in Shopify** in the app.

Rates in a subscription shipping profile are set in your store's currency. A shopper in a market with its own currency sees the rate converted at that market's exchange rate, and the subscription is created in the market's currency with that converted price, so a $5.00 rate at a rate of 0.8 reads £4.00 and renewals charge £4.00.

**Shipping options by market**

Below the zones, the **Shipping options by market** table lists each of your active markets with its flag and the options shoppers get there at checkout. On stores that use Shopify's shipping in Markets, the market's own shipping options show as grey labels and this profile's subscription rates show as blue labels. A market reads **Not shipping** when no zone with a rate covers it, and a market that is only partly covered names the countries that are missing, for example "No subscription rate for Canada". Subscription customers in those countries cannot check out an offer in this profile.

To fix it, click **Add zone** on the market's row. The zone editor opens with the missing countries already ticked and the zone named after them. Click **Done**, add a shipping option to the new zone and save. If the countries are already in a zone that has no rates yet, the row says so: add a shipping option to that zone instead. On stores that use Shopify's shipping in Markets, these are the options Shopify lists for the app in each market.

**Turn on shipping and add one-time options**

On stores that use Shopify's shipping in Markets, a market's shipping is a setting of the market itself, and the table shows where it stands:

* **Shipping is off in this market, so nothing is offered there.** Nobody in the market can check out, subscribers included. Click **Turn on shipping** and confirm. Your subscription rates are then offered there.
* **One-time orders can't ship here until the market has a shipping option.** Shipping is on, but the market only has your subscription rates, so a cart with a one-time product cannot check out. Click **Add shipping option** to add one.

**Add shipping option** opens a short form: a **Name** shoppers see at checkout, a **Price**, an optional **Shortest transit time** and **Longest transit time** in days, and an optional **Offer free shipping over a minimum order amount**. An example shows how it will read at checkout. The option ships from all your locations and applies to every product, so shoppers can choose it on any order. If the market has its own currency, the price is in that currency, exactly as shoppers see it. Otherwise it is in your store's currency, and shoppers in a market with local currencies see it converted.

Both buttons change the market's shipping settings in Shopify, and a market that inherited its shipping from your store default gets its own settings from then on. You can edit or remove what they add in **Markets** in your Shopify admin, which is also where you manage the options you made there yourself. The buttons are greyed out while the page has unsaved changes: save first, because the table reloads when a market changes.

The app only edits and deletes the profiles it created. If you made a shipping profile in Shopify's shipping settings and added some of your offers to it, it is listed under **Managed in Shopify** in the same card, read-only: edit or delete it in [Shopify shipping settings](https://admin.shopify.com/settings/shipping).

Once your store moves shipping to Markets, Shopify no longer lets you edit those profiles. To manage one in the app instead, click **Copy to the app** next to it and confirm. The app creates a subscription shipping profile with the same locations, zones and rates and moves your offers into it; the profile in Shopify stays as it is for your other products. Check the copied rates afterwards: rates turned off in Shopify are left out, carrier rates offer all of the carrier's services, and the page lists anything else it could not copy.

Subscriptions from offers that are not in a subscription shipping profile use the product's normal Shopify shipping profile (see [Shopify shipping settings](https://admin.shopify.com/settings/shipping)).

To give only some products free or cheaper subscription shipping, put those products in their own offer and attach that offer to a subscription shipping profile with the rates you want.

### Subscription checkout

|| This card appears on stores that use Shopify's shipping in Markets. On stores that still use Shopify's own shipping settings, subscribers already see only the rates of the subscription shipping profile, so there is nothing to switch.

By default, a subscriber at checkout sees your subscription rates **and** the market's regular shipping options for the first order, and chooses between them. Turn on **Show only subscription rates for subscription orders** to show subscribers only your subscription rates.

* It applies to a delivery whose items are all subscription items. A delivery with a one-time item keeps your regular options, and a cart with both is split into separate deliveries, so each is decided on its own.
* If a subscription rate is not available at that moment, for example a free shipping rate for orders over an amount the cart has not reached and no other subscription rate applies, the regular options stay so the customer can still check out.
* Pickup and local delivery options are never hidden.
* Renewals are not affected: they use the rate saved on the subscription.
* It keeps the subscription's shipping method consistent. With the switch off, a subscriber who picks one of the market's options for the first shipment still gets your subscription rate on renewals, but the subscription is labelled with the option they picked, for example "Standard" at the subscription rate's price.

The app tells your subscription rates from the market's options by their **name**, so give a subscription rate a name that no market option uses. When a market option shares a name with a rate in the profile you are editing, the market table warns you and the market option stays visible to subscribers until one of them is renamed. Changes to your rates take effect for the switch when you save the profile.

The card appears once you have approved the app's permission to customize shipping.

### Free subscription shipping

The **Free subscription shipping** card at the top of the page links to the setup guide. To make subscription shipping **free**, create a Shopify **Free shipping** automatic discount with **Purchase type = Subscription**, which also lets you limit free shipping to the first order or the first few orders. Full steps: [How to set up free subscription shipping](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/how-to-set-up-free-subscription-shipping-15ihw5v/). A subscription shipping profile with a free rate is the other way to do it.

### Changing shipping on existing subscriptions

* **One subscription**: open it, click **Edit**, then **Edit shipping** in the **Payment** card. Pick one of your current rates, **Free shipping**, or **Custom** (enter a **Rate name** and **Price**), click **Done**, then **Update contract**.
* **Many subscriptions**: on the Subscriptions list, filter by **Shipping price** if needed, select the subscriptions and choose **Update shipping price** from the bulk actions. You can **Recalculate from current shipping rates** or **Set a new shipping price**.

The new price applies from the next renewal. Full steps: [Renewals charge shipping or the wrong shipping rate](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/renewals-charge-shipping-or-the-wrong-shipping-rate-1uqzcbd/).

### Common questions

**Do subscribers pay shipping on every renewal?**
Yes. Each renewal charges the shipping price saved on the subscription, unless a free shipping discount for all recurring payments or a free rate applies.

**I chose Keep the initial shipping option but checkout still picks the cheapest rate. Is it working?**
Yes. The setting only affects renewals. At the first checkout the customer still sees and picks from your normal rates, and renewals then keep that choice.

**I changed my shipping rates. Why do existing subscriptions still charge the old price?**
Existing subscriptions keep the price saved at checkout. Use the **Update shipping price** bulk action, or turn on [Automatic shipping price updates](#3-automatic-shipping-price-updates) for the future.

**Can free shipping apply only to certain subscription products?**
Yes. Put those products in their own offer and attach it to a subscription shipping profile with a free rate.

**A shopper in one of my markets cannot check out with a one-time product. Why?**
The market has no shipping option of its own, only your subscription rates, which apply to subscription items. Click **Add shipping option** on the market's row in the **Shipping options by market** table, or add one in **Markets** in Shopify.

**Nobody in a market can check out and the checkout says shipping is not available. Why?**
Shipping is switched off for that market. Click **Turn on shipping** on its row in the **Shipping options by market** table, or switch it on in **Markets** in Shopify. A new zone can take a few minutes to reach checkout.

**A subscription is labelled "Standard" but charges my subscription rate. Why?**
The subscriber picked one of the market's regular options for the first shipment. Renewals still use the subscription rate. Turn on **Show only subscription rates for subscription orders** so subscribers can only pick your subscription rates.

**Subscribers still see a regular shipping option next to my subscription rate. Why?**
Turn on **Show only subscription rates for subscription orders** in the **Subscription checkout** card. If it is already on, check that no market option has the same name as one of your subscription rates.

**How do I make renewals use my flat rate instead of free shipping?**
Check that the products' Shopify shipping profile has the flat rate and that no subscription shipping profile or free shipping discount gives $0. Then fix existing subscriptions with **Update shipping price**.
