# Migrating to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions

If you are switching from another subscription app, this guide walks you through moving your existing subscribers to Supr Bundles & Subscriptions without disrupting their service. Your customers keep their products, their schedule and their saved payment details, and nobody is charged twice along the way. Our support team runs the import for you, so your part is mostly deciding when each step happens.

### When to use this guide

Use this guide if you are switching from a different subscription app and need to bring your existing subscribers into Supr Bundles & Subscriptions.

The order of these steps matters. Your old app keeps billing your subscribers right up until you uninstall it, and we only switch billing on after that. Following the sequence below is what keeps any customer from being charged by both apps.

### Step-by-step migration

1. **Turn off your current subscription app on your storefront** *(you)*
Disable its app embed and remove its widget blocks from your theme, so no new subscriptions can be created in it. **Do not uninstall it yet.** It carries on billing your existing subscribers until we are ready, and this also freezes its subscriber list so the export you send us is complete.
2. **Set up your offers in Supr Bundles & Subscriptions and publish the widget** *(you)*
Create your offers, then turn the widget on from **Design > Enable widget**. Do this while your old app is still installed, so you can see how it was configured and copy the settings across. From this point every new subscription is created in one place, with us.
3. **Send us your export** *(you)*
Export your subscriptions from your current app and send the file to us in chat, along with your store domain and the name of the app it came from. See [Which export to send us](#3-which-export-to-send-us). Do the export now, not earlier, so it includes everyone who subscribed in the meantime.
4. **We import your subscribers** *(us)*
We bring the subscriptions across and confirm the numbers with you: how many were imported and, if any could not be, which ones and why. Imported subscriptions arrive **on hold**: nobody is charged and no customer emails go out while we work.
5. **Uninstall your old app** *(you)*
Once we confirm the import is complete, uninstall your previous subscription app so it stops billing.
6. **We switch billing on** *(us)*
Tell us you have uninstalled the old app and we switch billing on for your imported subscriptions. Billing continues with us on each customer's existing schedule.

### Which export to send us

* **Use your old app's own subscription export**, the file its admin gives you when you export subscriptions or contracts. Shopify's sample file called `subscription-contracts-csv-template` is an empty template, not your data, so it cannot be imported.
* **Include every subscription you want to keep.** Active, paused and cancelled subscriptions can all be in the same file. Each one is imported with its status, so only the active ones will renew.
* **Send the raw file.** Do not open and save it in a spreadsheet app first, because that reformats long ID numbers and the import can no longer match your customers and products.

If you are moving from **Shopify Subscriptions**, open **Subscriptions** in that app and use **Export** to download all contracts as a CSV. From **Seal Subscriptions**, open **Subscriptions** and use **Export subscriptions**.

### What carries over and what does not

**Carried over for each subscription:**

* The customer and their saved payment method
* The products and variants, quantities and the price the customer pays, including the subscription discount where the export shows it
* The delivery and billing schedule and the next billing date. A date that has already passed is moved forward to the next cycle, so nobody is charged on import.
* The shipping address, delivery method and shipping price
* The status (active, paused, cancelled and so on)

**Not carried over:**

* **Order history.** Your past orders stay in Shopify under **Orders**, but each imported subscription starts with no previous orders listed on it in the app.
* **Discounts that lived outside the subscription.** If your old app gave subscribers something through a separate Shopify discount, for example an automatic free shipping discount on subscription orders, that discount is not part of the export and usually disappears with the old app. Re-create it in Shopify, see [How to set up free subscription shipping](/en-us/article/how-to-set-up-free-subscription-shipping-15ihw5v/).
* **Loyalty points or rewards balances** from your old app. Set up your rewards again in **Grow > Journeys** from the **Loyalty rewards** or **Spend rewards** template, see [Loyalty programs](/en-us/article/loyalty-programs-bun7bv/).
* **Your old app's settings**: its widget, portal, emails and plan setup. That is why step 2 comes first.

### While your imported subscriptions are on hold

Before we import anything, we freeze renewals for your store, and they stay frozen until we switch billing on. You can see this under **Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Settings > Pause Supr**. During that time:

* Your subscriptions show as **Active** in **Subscriptions** but none is charged, including any you already had with us, and their next billing date can pass without a renewal. That is expected: nothing is broken, and they renew once billing is on.
* **Do not unfreeze renewals yourself.** If renewals start while your old app is still installed, a customer could be charged by both apps. Tell us when your old app is gone and we switch billing on.
* **Check next billing dates.** A subscription whose next billing date passes while renewals are frozen is charged at your next renewal run after billing is switched on. If you would rather move those to their next cycle, change the date from the subscription's **Upcoming renewals** card with **Edit schedule**, or tell us before we switch billing on.

### Which apps can I migrate from?

**Shopify Subscriptions** and **Seal Subscriptions** have a ready-made importer, so these are usually the quickest. We have also migrated stores from **Recharge**, **Bold**, **Awtomic**, **Recurpay**, **Subify**, **Subi** and **Utterbond**. If your current app isn't on this list, just ask: we can usually still help as long as you're able to export your subscriptions.

### Moving from a platform outside Shopify

If your subscribers' cards are saved in your own Stripe account, for example because you sold subscriptions on Squarespace, you can usually bring them across without customers entering their cards again. Contact us in chat before you change anything: tell us the platform and roughly how many subscribers you have, and we plan the move with you. There is no ready-made importer for these platforms, so we send you our import template to put your subscriptions in.

* **The cards stay in Stripe.** Each saved card is linked to the matching Shopify customer by its Stripe customer id and payment method id. Shopify keeps only a reference to it, so nobody sees or re-enters card numbers.
* **Stripe connects to Shopify as a second payment provider.** Alongside Shopify Payments, you connect Stripe in your Shopify admin for these subscriptions; we send you the link. It has to be **the same Stripe account the cards are saved in**, and it has to stay connected, because renewals charge through it.
* **Shopify needs the payment method id that starts with `pm_`.** If some cards only have an older id that starts with `card_`, convert them to payment methods in your Stripe account first, then export.
* **Your customers need to be in Shopify first**, with the same email addresses they have in Stripe.
* **Test with one real card first.** Before the full import we bring across one subscription on a real card (your own is ideal) and charge it once, so you can check the Shopify order and the charge in Stripe. You can refund it afterwards.
* **An import cannot be undone, and it is not checked for duplicates.** Shopify only lets subscriptions be cancelled, not deleted, and importing the same subscriptions twice creates them twice. That is why each file is checked with you first and imported only once.

Otherwise the move follows the steps above, with one difference: instead of uninstalling an app, you stop subscription billing on your old platform once we confirm the import, and we switch billing on after that.

### Common migration questions

* **Do I need to create new subscription products?**
No. Your existing products and variants stay exactly as they are, and your imported subscribers stay on the products they are already subscribed to. What you do need to create is your offers in Supr Bundles & Subscriptions, which is what new customers will subscribe through from now on.
* **Will my old app's setup disappear when I uninstall it?**
Yes, its settings are removed along with the app. That is why step 2 comes before step 5: build your offers in Supr Bundles & Subscriptions while the old app is still installed and you can still see how it was set up.
* **Will my new offers be visible to customers before I'm ready?**
Only once you turn the widget on. Until then your product pages are unchanged, so you can build everything and preview it with no effect on what shoppers see.
* **Should I uninstall my old app first?**
No. Uninstalling ends the old app's billing, so do it only after we confirm the import is complete, never before, so your subscribers are never left without an app managing them.
* **Will my customers have to re-enter their payment details?**
In most migrations, no. When your old app charged through Shopify's own subscription system, as apps using Shopify Payments do, the saved payment methods live on your Shopify customer records rather than inside the old app, so they stay with your store and we rebuild the subscriptions against them. Some older setups kept cards with the app's own payment provider instead, so we confirm this with you before starting. Cards saved in your own Stripe account can usually be brought across too, see [Moving from a platform outside Shopify](#3-moving-from-a-platform-outside-shopify).
* **Will customers be charged twice, or charged during the move?**
No. Imported subscriptions stay on hold until you have uninstalled your old app and told us you are ready, specifically so no customer can be billed by both apps.
* **My imported subscriptions are not billing, or look pending. What's wrong?**
Nothing, as long as we have not switched billing on yet. They are on hold on purpose, see [While your imported subscriptions are on hold](#3-while-your-imported-subscriptions-are-on-hold). Once you have uninstalled your old app, tell us you are ready and we switch billing on.
* **Is there any downtime?**
No. Your store keeps running, and your existing subscriptions keep billing in your old app until you uninstall it. New subscriptions flow through Supr Bundles & Subscriptions as soon as your widget is live.
* **Are customers emailed during the migration?**
No, customer notifications are switched off while we import. Their subscription-management link changes to the Supr Bundles & Subscriptions portal, which they'll receive in their next email from us.
* **I only have one or two subscribers. Is there a quicker way?**
Yes. If the customer already has a saved payment method in Shopify, you can recreate their subscription yourself from **Subscriptions > Create subscription contract**, see [A beginner's guide to creating a subscription contract](/en-us/article/a-beginners-guide-to-creating-a-subscription-contract-qyhjgx/). Cancel it in the old app once the new one is set up.
* **How long does it take?**
It depends on your previous app and the number of subscriptions. Send us your export, or tell us which app you are on and roughly how many subscribers you have, and we'll confirm a timeframe before you change anything.
* **What does it cost?**
Migration help is free, reach out and we'll guide you through it.

### Important notes

|| Customers are not notified during the import process, but their subscription management link will change after the migration.
