# How subscription discounts work

There are two different ways to discount a subscription, and knowing which one to use saves a lot of confusion. This guide explains the difference between a **subscription option discount** (your everyday "subscribe & save") and **Shopify discounts** (codes and promotions), how each is calculated, how to make a discount apply only to the first order or to every renewal, and how to give a bigger discount on the first order.

### The two kinds of discount

| **Subscription option discount** = the recurring "subscribe & save" built into your offer. **Shopify discount** = a promotion or code you create in Shopify's Discounts area.

* **Subscription option discount**: set inside Supr Bundles & Subscriptions on each subscription option. It's the saving customers see in the widget ("Subscribe and save 10%") and it applies to **every order** in the subscription.
* **Shopify discount**: created in **Shopify admin > Discounts** (outside the app). Use it for discount codes, seasonal promos, free shipping, and offers that should only apply to the first order or the first few orders.

You can use both together. A Shopify discount comes off the price after the option's discount.

### Subscription option discounts

This is the most common way to reward subscribers. To set it:

1. Go to [**Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Offers**](https://admin.shopify.com/apps/super-subscriptions/app/offers) and open an offer.
2. Open a subscription option.
3. Turn on **Discount**.
4. Choose a **Discount type** and enter the value:
   * **Percentage**: for example 10% off every order. The field is **Value**.
   * **Amount off**: for example $5 off each product in every order. The field is **Value per product**.
   * **Fixed price**: the exact price of each product on the subscription. The field is **Value per product**.
5. Save the offer.

Leave **Discount** off for a subscription with no discount.

|| The discount you set here applies to **every recurring order**, not just the first one. It's shown in the storefront widget and saved on every subscription created from that option. Changing it later only affects **new** subscriptions.

### How percentage, amount off and fixed price are calculated

* **Per product, not per order.** **Amount off** comes off each product (each unit) on the subscription, and **Fixed price** sets each product to that price. On a bundle or a subscription with several items, an amount off is taken once per item and a fixed price is charged for every item. Use **Percentage** if the discount should scale with the whole order.
* **A fixed price applies to every product in the offer.** If an offer covers several products, all of them get the same fixed price, replacing their own prices. To give different products different fixed prices, put them in separate offers, or use **Percentage** or **Amount off**, which work from each product's own price.
* **A fixed price can be higher** than the product's one-time price, for example to include a service.
* **From the current price, not the compare-at price.** Percentage and amount off are taken from the product's current price in Shopify. Shopify does not calculate them from the compare-at (retail) price. If you want the subscription priced from the compare-at price, use a **Fixed price** subscription option in an offer for that product.
* **Prepaid subscription options**: the discount is worked out per delivery and then multiplied by the number of deliveries in the payment. See [Prepaid subscriptions](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/prepaid-subscriptions-1l5w5ze/).
* **Other currencies**: amount off and fixed price are entered in your store's currency and converted by Shopify for other markets. See [Selling subscriptions with B2B, Markets, and multiple currencies](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/selling-subscriptions-with-b2b-markets-and-multiple-currencies-wqinxw/).
* **Decimals**: type decimals with a dot, for example **2.5**, not 2,5.
* **Rounding**: Shopify rounds each product's price to the cent, so on multi-packs the total saving can differ from the exact percentage by a cent or so.

For more pricing methods (variants, prepaid), see [How to set the price of a subscription](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/how-to-set-the-price-of-a-subscription-1l0lq8e/).

### Shopify discounts and discount codes

For promotions and codes, use Shopify's native Discounts:

1. In **Shopify admin > Discounts**, click **Create discount** and pick a type (for example **Amount off products** or **Free shipping**).
2. Choose **Discount code** (customers type a code) or **Automatic discount**.
3. Under **Purchase type**, select **Subscription** (or **Both**). Shopify discounts apply to one-time purchases only unless you change this.

|| You only see the **Purchase type** option once you have at least one product in a subscription offer.

A Shopify discount is applied in the cart and at checkout. It is not shown in the widget on the product page, which always shows the subscription option's price.

### First order only vs every renewal

When a Shopify discount targets subscriptions, **Recurring payments for subscriptions** decides how many orders it applies to:

* **Limit discount to the first payment**: the initial order only. Great for a welcome offer.
* **Limit discount to multiple recurring payments**: the first *N* orders you choose. The customer applies it once at checkout and it carries to those orders automatically.
* **Discount applies to all recurring payments**: every order, for the life of the subscription.

A popular setup is a **one-time welcome discount for new subscribers** that can't be reused by cancelling and resubscribing. That uses a customer segment based on the *Has subscription contract* tag. See [How to offer a one-time use subscription discount](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/how-to-offer-a-one-time-use-subscription-discount-plg0ph/).

|| To limit a discount to specific customers (a customer segment), use a **discount code**.

### A bigger discount on the first order, then the normal discount

Many stores want, for example, **20% off the first order and 10% off every renewal**. There are two ways:

* **A loyalty program (exact, automatic)**: set the subscription option's discount to 20% and attach a loyalty program with a **Change discount** reward of 10% at **Order 2**, Duration **Ongoing (all future orders)**. The 10% **replaces** the 20% from the second order on.
* **A Shopify discount limited to the first payment**: set the subscription option to 10% and add a first-payment discount. It **stacks**: a 10% option and a 12% code give 20.8% off the first order, because the code comes off the already discounted price.

Step by step, with the trade-offs: [Offering a free trial or discounted first order](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/offering-a-free-trial-or-discounted-first-order-1ai5b8u/).

### Bundle discounts and subscription discounts together

By default, a bundle discount and a subscription option discount both apply when a customer buys a bundle on subscription, and they apply **in that order**: the bundle option sets what the pack costs, then the subscription discount comes off that price.

That order is what keeps the numbers you type predictable. The prices on a bundle option (a **bundle price** for the whole pack, or an **amount off** each item) are always read against your everyday one-time price, so the subscription discount lands on the pack price you set rather than the other way round.

| **Example.** A bag is $89.99 and your 2 pack option is priced at $179.98. A subscription option that takes 5% off means a subscriber pays $179.98 less 5%, which is **$170.98**, or $85.49 a bag.

|| Two **percentage** discounts multiply, they do not add. A 10% bundle option together with a 5% subscription discount comes to 14.5% off in total, not 15%.

|| **A fixed price subscription option is the exception.** A **Fixed price** subscription option sets the price of each product, so there is no percentage for the bundle option to come off. Where both are set, the bundle option's pack price is read against your one-time price and applied to the subscription price as the equivalent percentage, so a subscriber pays less than the pack price you typed. Because the two settings each claim to set the price, **new offers no longer accept the pair**: use a **Percentage** bundle option alongside a fixed price subscription option, or turn off **Apply discount to subscriptions** on the bundle option so it prices one-time orders only. Offers that already use both keep working as they do today.

If you would rather not stack them at all, switch the bundle discount off for subscription orders:

1. Go to [**Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Offers**](https://admin.shopify.com/apps/super-subscriptions/app/offers) and open the bundle offer.
2. Click the bundle option you want to change to open it. Under its main fields, each of its other settings is a small chip that names it and, once it is on, shows **On** or its value. Click **Apply discount to subscriptions**: the option's **Additional settings** section opens with that setting expanded.
3. Turn off **Apply discount to subscriptions**.

The bundle discount then applies to one-time purchases only, and subscribers get the subscription discount alone.

**The reverse (pack discounts for subscribers only):** set the bundle options' price to **Full price**, and add one subscription option per pack size with the discount you want for that pack. On each subscription option, click **Restrict to specific bundle options**, turn it on and tick only its pack. One-time packs then cost full price and each subscribed pack gets its own discount.

### When another discount app overrides your prices

Shopify never adds two product discounts together on the same cart line. When a line qualifies for your bundle option and for another automatic discount as well, Shopify charges whichever of the two is bigger and ignores the other. That is Shopify's rule, not something an app can change.

So an automatic discount elsewhere in your store, most often from another discount or bundle app, can quietly take over your bundle pricing:

* The product page shows the price your bundle option is set to.
* The cart and the checkout charge the other discount's price instead.
* The two agree only where the two discounts happen to match, which is why one pack size can look correct while another is wrong.

Shopify does not tell an app which products another app's discount covers, so the app does not flag this for you. Check it by hand:

1. Add the bundle to the cart and go to checkout. Each line shows the name of the discount applied to it. Ours carries the title of your bundle option (or **Volume discount**). A different name, such as "20% OFF" or "Free Gift", means that other discount is the one being charged.
2. In **Shopify admin > Discounts**, find the active automatic discount with that name, or any other active automatic discount that covers the same products.
3. Delete or pause the ones you are not using, then reload your product page, add the bundle to the cart again, and check the numbers match.

|| Our own two discounts are named **Supr Bundle Pricing** and **Supr Bundle Block Pricing** (on stores that installed the app before September 2026 they may still show their older names until the app next updates them). Leave those in place: they are what charges your bundle prices and zeroes your free gifts. Deleting one stops your bundles discounting altogether.

Discount codes work differently, because a shopper enters one deliberately. If a code wipes out a bundle price or makes a free gift cost money, open the code in **Shopify admin > Discounts** and, under **Combinations**, allow it to combine with **Product discounts**. If the cart still does not match the widget, contact support with the product link and the code.

### Free shipping

Free shipping for subscriptions is a Shopify **Free shipping** discount with **Purchase type = Subscription**, and you can use the same "first / first N / all" recurring control above. Follow [How to set up free subscription shipping](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/how-to-set-up-free-subscription-shipping-15ihw5v/). If it isn't applying, see [My subscription free shipping discount is not working](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/my-subscription-free-shipping-discount-is-not-working-rqlqnv/). To give free shipping from a certain order onward, use a **Free shipping** reward in a [loyalty program](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/loyalty-programs-bun7bv/).

### Changing a discount on an existing subscription

Editing an option's discount, a Shopify discount or a loyalty program only affects **new** subscriptions. Existing subscriptions keep the terms they were created with, including any Shopify discount applied at their checkout. Removing a customer from an automatic discount later does not take it off their subscription.

To change the discount on an active subscription, open it in [**Supr Bundles & Subscriptions > Subscriptions**](https://admin.shopify.com/apps/super-subscriptions/app/contracts), click **Edit**, and use **Edit discount**. See [Editing a Subscription Contract](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/editing-a-subscription-contract-155rpav/) and [How to add or remove a discount from an existing subscription](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/how-to-add-or-remove-discount-from-the-existing-subscription-contract-w7w5lu/).

### Common questions

**Can customers use a discount code together with the subscription discount?**
Yes. The subscription option's discount is part of the subscription price, and a Shopify discount set to **Purchase type: Subscription** comes off on top of it. The **Combinations** box only concerns other Shopify discounts.

**How do I give a bigger discount on the first order and a smaller one after?**
Use a loyalty program with a **Change discount** reward at Order 2, or a Shopify discount limited to the first payment. See [A bigger discount on the first order, then the normal discount](#3-a-bigger-discount-on-the-first-order-then-the-normal-discount).

**Can the subscription discount be calculated from the compare-at price?**
No. Shopify takes percentage and amount off discounts from the product's current price. Use a **Fixed price** subscription option if you need an exact price.

**Why does my Amount off or Fixed price apply to every item in a bundle?**
Both are per product, which is how Shopify prices subscription lines. Use **Percentage** to scale with the whole order, or give each pack its own subscription option with **Restrict to specific bundle options**.

**Do I need separate offers for products with different subscription prices?**
Not for **Percentage** or **Amount off**, which work from each product's own price. Yes for **Fixed price**, which sets the same price for every product in the offer.

**Can I discount only the one-time purchase and show it on the product page?**
A discount for one-time purchases only has to be a Shopify discount, and Shopify applies those in the cart and at checkout, so it does not show on the product page or in the widget. The usual setup is to keep your product price as the one-time price and discount the subscription options.

**The discount field won't accept my decimal. What do I do?**
Use a dot, for example 2.7 rather than 2,7.

**Do Shopify discounts work on existing subscriptions?**
An automatic discount only reaches new subscriptions at checkout. To add a discount to an existing subscription, use **Edit discount** on that subscription.
