# Billing Error: “Purchase Type Not Supported”

If a subscription shows **Billing error: Purchase type not supported**, the customer's card or bank does not allow recurring charges. This is common with debit, prepaid, virtual and business cards. It can start even when the same card worked for earlier renewals, for example after the bank changed its rules or the customer blocked the payment in their banking app.

Nothing is wrong with your store, your payment settings or the app, and it only affects this customer's card.

### How to fix it

1. Open the subscription from [**Subscriptions**](https://admin.shopify.com/apps/super-subscriptions/app/contracts) and click **Update payment method** on the billing error banner. If the customer has another card saved, you can switch the subscription to it. Otherwise, click **Send email** to email the customer a secure link. You cannot enter card details for them.
2. Ask the customer to use a different card (a credit card often works where a debit card does not), or to ask their bank to allow recurring payments on this card. They need to update through the link in the email: changing the card in their store account does not update the subscription.
3. Once they have updated, charge the renewal again. Click **Renew immediately** on an active subscription, or **Activate subscription** on a paused or failed one.

|| The customer is also emailed automatically when the renewal fails (**Action Required: Issue renewing your subscription**), asking them to update their payment method. The app keeps retrying on the schedule in your [Dunning settings](https://supr-bundles-and-subscriptions.crisp.help/en-us/article/dunning-settings-14fp497/), so if the customer updates their card before the last retry, the next retry can go through on its own.

### Common questions

**The staff email said the renewal failed because of an issue with my shop. Is something wrong with my store?**
No. This error is always the customer's card or bank. Older staff emails for this error used the store issue wording; the fix is still for the customer to use another card.

**Can I fix this without the customer?**
Only if the customer already has another working card saved: pick it under **Update payment method**. Otherwise the customer has to enter a card through the secure link.

**Why did it work last month and fail now?**
Banks can start blocking recurring charges on a card at any time, and customers can block a merchant in their banking app. The card itself may still work for normal purchases.

**Should I charge again straight away?**
Wait until the customer confirms they have updated their card. Each attempt on a card that still refuses sends them another failed payment email.
